sega turbo pedal how do you wire it for mame use
« on: June 09, 2004, 09:10:14 pm »
I have a pedal from a sitdown sega turbo cabinet. The connector on it, is similar to the steering wheel. It is a half circle that rotates back and forth between two sets of black poles. I guess its an electrical  connection. I want to wire it for mame use. Is there any way to do this without an optipac? Let me know what i need to do.

Do you have a photo?  Usually pedals use potentiometers (pots)...not sure what the 'black poles' are you speak of, unless it is some kind of hall effect?

go to this link...it has a pic of a steering wheel which has a very similar connection with the black post things I was talking about.

Hopefully Paige will see this as he's familar with that pedal. As I remember it uses an optical sensor, which means either the Optipac, some sort of mouse hack, or conversion to a pot based system.

I believe theres 2 types of pedals for turbo.

The one I have has 2 optos... so a total of like 6 positions are possible.

Youd need to use an optipac to read the 2 optos...and mame has to support that type of input.  Some of the drivers do not allow digital input... rather - they are just set up to use pot values instead.

should I switch the pedal out for a different one, if so what do you recommend for a sit down cabinet?

Yes - you'd be much better off with a pot based pedal.

Easiest solution is to use a typical usb pc pedal set.

Or - you could grab another arcade pedal that uses a 5k pot... and convert it to use pc joystick pots... or buy an analog interface card thats arround here somewhere.

If you can ...post the pics of the pedal.  Im currious to see if its the same as mine.  If you do not need it - maybe i could use it as my turbo pedal isnt functioning correctly.  I think the circuit board on it is busted.

I tried to send you a pm with a pic but the file is too big....would you be willing to trade for a pot based pedal?

Well,  The only pot based pedal i have is a pc wheel/pedal set  *microsoft ffb.   And while the thing turned out to be unhackable for my needs - i couldnt trade an 90$ set for a
20$ at most part that may not fix my problem anyway.

You should be able to find a true analog arcade pedal on ebay... or just grab a pc steering/pedal set from the store - as they work fine and have no need for the special converter boards that the arcade pedals will need.

You can mail a pic at:

 stevelundquist@yahoo.com

For reducing file size - use a photo editing program and choose to resize it to like 1024*768... then save it as a .jpg
with medium quality setting.

Most new digital cameras take very large pictures which makes for good prints.  But if your not planning on printing them out - the size will be too big to even view correctly on your monitor.

 Sincerely,
 Steve
