I may be getting an MK cabinet - JPAC to go to MAME??
« on: June 09, 2004, 12:49:33 pm »
After reading up on the Ultimarc site about the J-PAC this sounds like what I need for this cabinet to allow MAME ability.

If I get this cabinet it will be 100% working with boards, Monitor, and Controls.  What exactly would I need to be able to use everything in the cabinet (I may replace all the joysticks and buttons as they look pretty worn).

Based on preliminary research it looks like I need a J-PAC and Arcade VGA card, is this right??

I would be getting the cabinet for $175, the cabinet is in pretty decent shape (no side art though -- its been removed) and has LOTS of nice internal bracing and the monitor looks fine.  I intend to do a new CP overlay, Marquee and side art (I really like what SNAAKE posted in the projects forum and would like to go with that if he is agreeable to it).

Anyway enough babbling, let me know your advice please.

THANKS!!

If that's an original Mortal Kombat (and not a conversion) don't Mame it!  They're quite sought after.

Nope not a true MK cabinet.  I am sure its a conversion because it does not look like the MK cabinet on the KLOV site.

It is much more like the MKII cabinet on the KLOV site but has MK 1 in it.

Hey guys, doesn't Mortal Kombat use a medium resolution monitor?

If so, I don't think it will work with the ArcadeVGA card unless the monitor has a switch/jumper to run it as a low res monitor (15KHz).

Well I bought the cab last night, will get overe the w/e sometime (raining yesterday  :( ).

Anyway its actually an MKII cabinet with Relief Pitcher (fully working with a 25" Wells Gardner monitor in there as well).  I believe most call this a Dynamo cabinet and looks EXACTLY like the one pictured on the KLOV site for MKII.

The cabinet will definitely need some love from me but none of the panels are warped, swelled etc.  It is very solid and sturdy and should do nicely for a dedicated MAME fighter cab.  Now to decide whether or not to keep and use the monitor or not  :-\

Get some model number info off the monitor and post it here.  I'm sure someone will be able to tell you if it is a 15KHz monitor (or switchable to 15KHz).

If you're looking to get rid of it, I may be interested in that monitor if you aren't too far away.

By the way, the KLOV site has 2 cabs for MKII. One is a Dynamo cab and one is the original MKII Midway cab. The second one (Midway) is better IMO. Is that what you have?

Well shoot me an email at gshanes@comcast.net on the Monitor I am sure we can work something out.

The cabinet I am getting is DEFINITELY the first one and it is a Dynamo cabinet.  It has a Dynamo label right on the front of it under the CP.  Its all good though, while I would prefer the other style, this one is still going to be perfect for my brother-in-law.  Its gonna be a dedicated 2p fighter cab so the CP is already setup exactly how I need (just needs coin up buttons).

Are you SURE you want to go through the trouble (and cost) of purchasing a TV and figuring a way to mount it in the cabinet?

If the cab is already set up the way you want, why not just get an ArcadeVGA & J-PAC for $158 total (shipping included) from Ultimarc.
You could have it up and running in under an hour.  The J-PAC just plugs into the existing JAMMA harness.

Then hack up a $10 pair of computer speakers and wire up the amplifier to the existing cab speakers....
http://www.oscarcontrols.com/speaker/

Finally, (and this is totally optional) I'd add a Bits Limited SmartStrip LCGI for $29.95 to turn on the cab automatically when the computer is started...

Well to be honest with you 2 reasons:

1. Cost.  I think the monitor is worth at least a few $$$ (100-150 I think) so hopefully I can sell it to someone.  This covers the cost of a new 25" TV with SVIDEO.

I already have a MINI-PAC interface to use for the controls(all the controls have to be replaced as they are horrible) and all the computer parts (including a Radeon 7000 series with SVIDEO out) so there would be no need to buy an ARCADE VGA card and JPAC (savings of $150 total).  So my additional cost is actually 0 under this deal.  Otherwise I need to spend the $150, and I honestly don't care about the Relief Pitcher board in there and will sell it (hey its gotta be worth a few $$ on its own)

2.  I am TOTALLY uncomfortable working with this thing.  I will work with enough to get it out of the case and thats it but an OPEN TV monitor is not my idea of fun.  Yes maybe I am a wuss but I have been lit up by household electricity a number of times when playing weekend warrior to know that the all that current in the monitor is not something I want screw around with at all. (yes I am chicken  :-[ :o )

But I am not necessarily ruling this out yet either.

Well where are you located, GCS? If the monitor is in good working condition I'd be pretty interested in it, but if shipping is too expensive it may not end up being worth it, ya know? I'm moving into a bigger place, though, and will now have the room to afford projects.

I'll admit that krick makes some great points, though. If it weren't for you already having all those parts I would recommend his route any day. Do keep in mind that you can always sell THOSE parts, too, though.

Alan,

I'm in Richmond, VA.

Email and we can come up with something I think.

To be honest if this was for me I would probably leave it that way, buy a Tekken board to put in place of the Relief Pitcher, get an Arcade VGA and JPAC and then pop in the MAME computer and rock & roll.  I love Tekken and there isn't a working Tekken rom (AFAIK) and this would give me Tekken and everything else I have.

BUTTTT .....

This is for my brother-in-law and its a gift and cost is a major factor here since I am paying for everything.  I am already spending more on this "gift" than any gift that he has ever gotten before so the cheaper the better.  But krick is right about "the best way".
