1"*1" strips of wood for inside cabinet?
« on: June 08, 2004, 06:27:20 pm »
Are these 1"*1" strips of wood I'm thinking of popular enough to be at any home depot? I keep forgetting to check, but I know I haven't seen them. What section are they normally in? Or are people just making them themselves by cutting up larger pieces?

I'm planning on screwing everything in from the inside through the 1" strips to hold the cabinet together to cut down on weight, and keep the outside smooth without counter-sinking and filling.

I had trouble finding 1x1's but maybe that's a local thing. I ended up using 2x2's. I'm actually kind of glad I did as some of the screws are in some very tight places and I don't think I could have reached with a 1x1.

you might find it in the molding or trim department.  it may only be 3/4 x 3/4, but if not using for weight bearing components, then it should be fine.

True 1x1's are pretty hard to find, you may need to get something like that from a true lumberyard or sawmill.  Home Depot has 3/4" x 3/4" pine in the trim & molding section, not with the lumber.

I used 3/4" x 3/4" for the corner blocks in my minicab, and 3/4" x 1 3/4" for the rear door supports:

FractalWalk is correct about the space, though.  I wouldn't use 3/4" x 3/4" myself if I were using screws.  It can be pretty tight getting a screw gun in the corners and tight against the cab sides.  I used glue and a low profile pneumatic stapler similar to this,
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=46365, that gets right in the narrow spaces.  With a pneumatic stapler and glue blocks, you can put a cab together very quickly with no fuss, it works great!

I found my 1X1's in the garden centre part of the hardware shop. They were selling them as garden stakes. Had to look at a few to get stright ones but they worked perfectly and were very cheap.

Rough sawn, or were they planed?  Typically rough sawn 1" is planed down to 3/4".

As another note, when using corner blocks, liberal use of glue is very important.  The screws/staples are usually there to hold the blocks in place until the glue cures, which is where you get all the strength in the joint.  I would caution against using rough sawn lumber for a glued joint, it doesn't make as strong as a bond.

I used, of all things, outdoor hardwood 1x1.25" stakes.  You can buy a bundle of them for about $2.99 for 6 count 4' or 12 count 2' ones, Just saw off the end tapered part and then use them as the cross pieces.

Advantages: Hardwood so your screws CANNOT be drilled to far into them and end up poking out the other side.

Disadvantage: You will need to predrill and usually drill a countersink into them in advance.

I used it to build my last one that I routered in the cross pieces to provide extra strength when moving. I also used a caulk-gun tube of "PL 400" polyurathane glue. (It's stronger than the glue used in plywood).  Suffice it to say that cabinet will not fall apart. The MDF will split before a side will come off.

Yeah they were planed, which surprised me for garden stakes. They turned out to be perfect for the job, and I only paid about $5 for about 15' of timber ( 3 stakes ).
On a side note I first of all tried to cut my 2X2's in to 1X1's with my skill saw, it wasn't pretty, lol.

The 1X1s are in the same section as the dowel rods. Ask your clerk where the dowels are and you'll see the 1x1s in the same bin.

I used 2x4s and 2x2s inside my cabinet.  Just buy a 2x4 and rip it lengthwise down the middle to get a 2x2, cheap and easy.

Tilz is right.  Home Depot carries true 1x1's.  They're in the dowels.  They've got round and square dowels and the square ones go up to 1"x1".  Every Home Depot I've been in in the last year has had them (which is only three or four different stores, but still...

Lowe's has 1x1 as dowels also, I didn't mention them earlier as the are usually (don't know about Home Depot) made of fine wood and higher price.  But if you really want a 1x1...     :)
