cocktail cabinets question
« on: June 04, 2004, 10:30:49 pm »
i was thinking about cocktail cabinets and have recalled that some are 4-player, 1 on each side. if this is so, how does the picture on the monitor/screen appear upright to all 4 people? or is it upside down to some? do a lot of games use cocktail cabinets, or are they just a novelty?

There are a scant few (and I MEAN SCANT) games that came in the 4-player cocktail format. All of which were designed for it.

Warlords.
Quadrapong
Elimination (and several other Pong versions).
Atari Football
Eliminator (4 player version).
and (I think) Tehkan World Cup.

I can't think of any others. It is not a common form factor, and it takes an INSANE amount of floor space.

Joust was made in cocktail style.  Very cool, different cabinet it was.

It was a two player game.

I have seen a couple cocktail Jousts in person. Pretty easy design to build, basically a 19" cocktail about a foot wider than normal (not too deep though), with two control panels in front, slightly angled off towards the sides. It wasn't actually an original design, more of a Rip Off of the OLD (pre invaders), Midway cocktail, used for games like Gun Fight.

I learn something every day.  Seems Midway was King of the Cocktails:

Yeah, Gunfight cocktails are usually attempted to be pawned off as "Rare Joust Cocktail".  But even a quick glance and you'll see the differences. Joust is a lot nicer IMHO.

A gunfight looks like a cheap 1970's electronic piano with a bump out and a monitor mounted flat in the top.

Yeah, but those 70s cabinets have some real flavor to them. Lots of different shapes and looks. Everything started to look the same after Pac-Man came out.

I have owned a lot of 70s cabinets, 8 or 9 of them I believe.

In My Humble Opinion.

Another one you will see a lot is IIRC, which is "If I Remember Correctly".

No one really answered the question by Nefesis and that was ' how does the picture on the monitor/screen appear upright to all 4 people' (or 2 people for that matter). I would like to know the same as I have never seen documentation on this so if anyone could explain I would be grateful.

Regards to all,
