Assault -- Anyone try to build one of these yet??

I remember how awesome this games was with the 2 joysticks to control the tank.  Each joystick had triggers on it.

Anyone try to build one of these and run the MAME version on it??

I'm gonna be using Wico ball-top sticks that have a button on the tops. And I'm doing it specifically because of this game (one of my Favorites).
NO MORE!!

Haven't built a panel for it yet, but there's no reason it shouldn't work with MAME.

Cool.

Glad I'm not the only one who loves this game.

I spent many a night and quarter playing this and TOP GUNNER aka JACKAL in the basement of my dorm in college.  Both of those games ate tons of my $$$!!

The layout is pretty simple with a modular panel.  Pop two top fire sticks in and you are up and running.

More challenging is Vindicators - which requires rotate buttons on each stick plus 1-2 fire buttons.  On the modular panel you can do it with a top fire on the left and converted PC "tron" style (8 way, 3 button) stick on the right.  Takes a little practice to rotate the turret and tank at the same time, but great fun.

I LOVED Assault.  My Dad's office was near a convienience store on the Oregon State University campus that had one.  I would have my mom drop me off at the comic book store, and after I was done there, I would walk up to catch a ride home with my dad and if I had time I was in that store playing Assault and munching on Mexi Fries from the Taco Time next door.

Ahhhh.... memories. :)

They have the sticks at Happ Controls.  I'd love to buy a real machine someday though...:)

Easier solution for Vindicators/Assault - Use one of the many Raider Pro (Thumb and Trigger) PC stick to Arcade base conversions for both right and left sticks.

I have 2 pair of theese sticks...one blue pair and one black pair. Theese work great for vindicators also  ;D A modular panel does make it easier though...I tried different ways to have just a swappable stick, but that really doesn't work too well.

Same general concept - my "tron" style stick is actually an old converted Logitech Wingman handle on a Happs competition base.  I have 3 buttons wired up.  (I'll post some picts this weekend) A Raider Pro would work just as well, but I happened to have an old Wingman laying around that I did not need anymore.
