SpyStyle's Arcade Building Walkthrough, What Happened?
« on: June 01, 2004, 02:04:51 pm »
SpyStyle had recently made a walkthrough with like 800 pictures for newbies on building an arcade cabinet, it was an excellent arcade, but it never loaded after page 5,  maybe it does now but i havent looked in a while, its not on the news page either anymore. I recently went to old news to open it again, which i have done many times, and now it says this page cannot be displayed. I dont think this should be forgotten, it was one of the best walkthroughs i have ever seen and the author put alot of time into it with all the pictures, I was wondering if the whole thing will ever be put onto the site, and if saint is ever going to finish it. SpyStyle you are not forgotten!

I have also visited Spy's site for inspiration during my cabinet planning process. Now that I am actually building my cab, it would be nice to revisit Spy's site and get more inspiration! Spy! Come Back!!! :'(

I think he was having problems with his hosts since the walkthrough was so large with the pictures.  He did say he had a PDF version that was pretty large.  Maybe you can IM him and ask if it's available.

I have the book project arcade, and i have this website, but spystyles page is what can really help people, especially newbies, because there isnt alot of tech terms, and he is short and to the point, and he has a picture for every step.  he basically says  " now we do this" Saint, if you are reading this, I am probably not the only one who wants this back, and can we please have the whole site this time? not just 5 pages of it, Please! Thanks

If there is anyone out there who also wants this back, and the full version of it, post in this thread, maybe the more people we get we can get it back. I dont want this to be forgotten, it is an excellent guide.

Were there ever more than six pages?  My left head can't remember for sure and the right is positive that was it (I do hate when they quibble between themselves).  The 'Stay Tuned' at the bottom of six leads me to believe it's all there, but it does seem like there were a few more.

Regardless, I agree it is an excellent resource.  Pictures work better for me than a lot of text.

There was never more than 6 pages that you could see, but i believe it was supposed to be like somewhere around 20, when spystyle had it on some other page hosting him, once u got past page six it had said something like he had reached his limit, and after page six on arcade controls, it said "stay tuned" at the bottom, but after this it was booted off the new news page and u could never see the complete instructions. On spystyles original post i had said something about if saint could put it on here, and he did, but it was never complete, thats why I posted this wanting the whole thing on arcade controls. I was hoping if alot of people posted maybe it would happen. It is really an excellent instruction guide with alot of pictures for newbies, I hope we get this back.

If it's such large picture files and such why not have the site owner put it all on a CD and sell it?

If it's such large picture files and such why not have the site owner put it all on a CD and sell it?

Or he could have simply shown thumbnails on the pages and you'd only have to click the pics you wished to see full-sized.  I prefer to choose which pics I see and not have to wait for an entire 20 pages of images to load up every time I view a page.  It would greatly reduce the bandwidth.

Do we actually know what are on these "mythical" 14 additional pages that 3eye is hyping?  I don't think it falling off the News page made the extra 14 pages disappear but perhaps Saint has greater magical powers than we know.

I have mad skills and amazing powers - beware, beware! :)

As far as I know, there were only ever 6 pages. SpyStyle has an account to update the site as he chooses with no specific bandwidth cap (other than a plea to keep it reasonable, of course) so a private message to SpyStyle is probably your best bet...

Cheers!

just had a look at his tutorial. very well presented. I'd just like to point out though that (at least in Australia) what he calls MDF (medium density fibreboard) would be called chipboard. MDF has a much finer texture (and therefore easier to finish), much like cardboard. It is also known by the brand name Craftwood:

http://www.supercheaptimber.com.au/category31_1.htm

chipboard, on the other hand is by definition chips of wood (as opposed to fibres of wood):

Actually, in his walkthrough, he says that MDF would be the wood of choice for a beginner.  He then states that in his pictures he is using particle board (or chip board).

So, its not that he was mistaken on the type of wood, he just was using the particleboard in his pictures while recommending MDF.

That tutorial seems pretty complete to me. The only thing missing is adding in the "guts", but really, you can find that sort of info elsewhere.

My only problem with this guy's tutorial is his choice of wood for the main sides. Take a look at the close up shots once its painted. It still looks like painted particle or press-board! UGH!

He is in fact using wafer/chip board and not partical board like he states. I just want to clear that up because what he's using does in fact hold screws very well but partical board does not . Wafer board definately needs to be covered with laminate as it will look like absolute crap if you try to paint it.  That is a mighty nice tutorial. Definately the best one I've seen.

A builder friend of mine said that the wood Spy is using in his tutorial is known as Oriented Strand Board, or OSB. It's apparently used in place of more expensive plywood.

All right people calm down.......wood is wood - choose your own now - everyone has a personal preference for their own reasons.....i personally use 12mm mdf (easy to use)....... ive browsed spy's stuff (great stuff) and found the pics very helpful. doesnt really matter what wood he used - its just a guide ::) !!

Hello my fellow arcade builders !

My idea was to make a simple "picture book" walk-through for the new builder, and I am very happy that it's been well received.

My sincere apologies that it is not yet finished, I am a single father with 2 part time jobs. I will finish it as soon as time and interest permit.

The cabinet itself is built on a shoestring budget, hence the inexpensive wood. In the tutorial I recommend MDF for you fellas.

I may have been mistakenly referring to OSB as particle board, that's what it's called at Home Depot. I will look into it and correct it. In my experience that stuff is almost indestructible, but needs to be laminated.

My e-mail address is diyarcade at yah oo dot co m, feel free to contact me with any further questions/comments/suggestions.

and for the record I'd like to thank all my fans for your words of encouragement !

w00t :)

Did you fellas know there are woman arcade builders ? Isn't that far out ? The last one I interrogated was a Sara from NH who had a multi-wiliams and was building a Q*bert, how inspiring ! Am I the only one who finds this pleasantly surprising ? Am I the only one who lives in an area where a fella can find 30 strippers before he can find one girl that owns power tools ? (excluding electric dildos)

You haven't been in the chat room and talked to StarGoddess and her lego spinner :)
