Adhesive for floor mats?
« on: May 27, 2004, 11:40:20 am »
I'm replacing the floor mats on a sit-down cabinet. I'll be attaching vinyl mats to wood (painted probably).

What do you recommend?  Contact cement? spray adhesive?

I'd prefer something that sets up slowly, so I don't have to get the mat perfectly straight on first contact.

TIA,

Rocky

Use Vinyle tile cement, the stuff used to glue those 12"x12" vinyle tiles to the floor. I used that stuff when I did my basement floor and the stuff is easy to use and cleans up with water. Takes like an hour for the stuff to set!

What about velcro on all 4 corners?  That way, if you ever have to replace them, it'll be easy!

I'd glue a piece of non-skid mesh to the backing of the floor mat and leave it loose. The non-skid will keep the floor mat from moving around, plus you'll be able to remove it for cleaning. The non skid I'm thinking of is a nylon mesh that's covered with foamed rubber. It's sold both for keeping rugs from sliding around on a hardwood floor, and for lining tool box drawers.

I'm planning on doing a permanent install of the floor mat. I removed the old one and it looked great underneath. On top, 20 year old gum and other crud.  The edges are all secured by the brackets screwed into the cabinet, so the glue just keeps the mat from shifting or bunching up.

I figure if the original can last 20+ year, my repair should last as long as I need it.

I just finished the Floors on my Virtual-on sit down Cab. I bought runner material from Home Depot..and used 3m 77 adhesive spray. It allows you to peel of the floor if you ever need to replace it again. My word of advise is to use the spray liberally. the plywood will suck up the adhesive..and make sure you spray the floor and the floor material. It's amazing what a dirrerence a new floor can make...If your floor has stainless steel edging I would recommend taking some brasso to it...makes it new and shiny. ;D

Mine has edging brackets. I assumed they were chrome, but they could be stainless steel. They have held up amazingly for their age.  I was wondering about polishing them up.  I've never tried brasso.  Thanks for the tip.
