What arcade "classics" would you put on this PC?
« on: May 25, 2004, 01:38:55 am »
Just got a free Pentium II 233 mhz 64MB PC. I'm thinking about making a mini Arcade Classics cab for it. What "classics" would you put on this PC?

This is what you've given me so far:

    VERTICAL:
    • 1942/1943
    • Arkanoid
    • Burgertime
    • Centipede
    • Dig Dug
    • Donkey Kong
    • Donkey Kong Jr.
    • Frogger
    • Galaga
    • Galaxian
    • Gyruss
    • Mr. Do!
    • Ms. Pacman
    • Pac man
    • Phoenix
    • Q*Bert
    • Qix
    • Scramble (??)
    • Sinistar
    • Tempest
    • Time Pilot
    • Tron
    • Vanguard
    • Xevious
    • Zaxxon

    HORIZONTAL:

    • Asteroids
    • Berzerk (??)
    • Bubble Bobble
    • Commando
    • Crazy Climber
    • Defender
    • Elevator Action
    • Gauntlet
    • Gradius
    • Joust
    • Marble Madness
    • Mario Bros.
    • Missile Command
    • Moon Patrol
    • Popeye
    • Robotron
    • Space Invaders
    • Star Castle
    • Stargate
    • Tapper
    • Tetris

Am I missing any? I'm assuming all these older games will run on this PC. Is this a correct assumption? Will a game like Ghosts and Goblins or Gunsmoke run on this PC?

    I'd add (my personal favorites):

    Space Invaders
    Tapper
    Double Dragon
    Golden Axe
    Spy Hunter
    1942/1943
    Gradius/Salamander/Nemesis
    Thunder Cross
    Pooyan
    Wonder Boy
    Mario Bros.
    Popeye

Some of these are from the late 80's so not really considered from the "classic" era, but since I've spent my time in Arcade halls well into my 20's, they are classics to me :)

I am sure there are plenty more that I am forgetting. I haven't worked on my list yet.

everything from The Golden Age folder in MAME32.

There were two arcades within biking distance when I was a kid (Fun Spot and Egads) and I think they had most of those games between them in '82-'83.  I was 12 and life was grand.

If you go under the "Custom" folder, you will see the "Golden Age Folder".... I think it's about 90 games listed there.

Do you know off hand which ones are vertical and which ones are horizontal. I'm going to go with a horizontal PC monitor for these games.

You can play certain horizontal games just as well on a vertical monitor, you just need to set the controls so left is up and right is down. Works perfectly for games like Asteroids, Gauntlet and Super Sprint; though you will have to tilt your head to the side to read your score.  :P

What size monitor are you going to use?

I also have a p2 and I set mine up to be vertical but now I'm wishing I went horizontal an just had the vertical games play smaller since they are not streching to the full size of the vertical monitor anyways.  It's a bar top so having tapper on it would have been nice and if it was vertical I could have made it smaller.

Wellm considering it's going to be a mini for my nephew and the fact that I have an extra one, I'll probably be using a 17" CRT monitor...

You have to get Michael Jackson's Moonwalker in there somehow, it is one of the moest classic arcade games ever, making 1990 the year for arcades. It fits in perfect with your other classics such as pacman and galaga, Dont forget MOONWALKER!!!

Might take some ingenious control mapping, but the 1 player Karate Champ is a fun vertical game that'll run on a 266 no problem.  I play it with one joy and 4 butons fairly naturally now.

Are you going to have a spinner or trackball?  Kids like Bomb Bee and Cutie-Q.  Both verts, both crosses between pinball and breakout, both designed by the guy who designed PacMan.

Speaking of whom: Jr. Pacman and Pacman Plus (both verts).

Capcom Bowling  (trackball, not particularly classic, vert)

    Gorf! (vert)

    Bosconian (?)

    Racer X (?)

Joust II is vertical with the same basic gameplay as the original.

    Kick(man)  (?)

That's all i can think of right now...

I don't think I'm going to have either. I'm going to make it a mini-MAME for the kids and I'll probably only put 2 sticks and a few buttons on the CP. Maybe a stick and 2-3 buttons per player.
