I'm about to order this:
http://www.happcontrols.com/trackballs/56010011.htm

Do I still need one of these:

Also, in case it matters, I'm going to hooking this up to an Opti-Pac along with a Vortex Spinner.

If you are planning to mount in wood, yes, a mounting plate would make your life easier.  Not mandatory but it is an easier approach than other options.

You may want to explore this option instead.  http://www.happcontrols.com/trackballs/55110100.htm

yes as Zaphod said, it all depends on what you are mounting in.  My control panel is particle board bottom with a lexan top.  I was able to go without a mounting plate because of the lexan top, it basically acts as its own mounting plate.

So a 1/8" piece of lexan is strong enough to support trackball play?  That's a good idea.

take note though

the mounting plate is 10 bucks... maybe 12 at happs...

hack with lexan if you don't want it to look like a mounting kit... Otherwise just do it.

Can anyone comment on the quality of Happs' boltless mounting plate versus the "regular"?

What was that again?

I've used the boltless version numerous times and have been very pleased with the quality and durability.  It's a nice product.

I have no experience with the other type.

Well, I ordered the mounting kit "just in case" I decide to use it.  I'd like the cabinet to look as professional as possible, so I'll probably end up just using lexan...

On a side note, do I have to do anything special to connect this trackball (Happ's 3" Golden Tee Trackball) to my Opti-Pac?  I heard I have to cut off a connector or something...
