Broke wire.
« on: May 20, 2004, 04:11:05 am »
I have this Pacman almost ready to go together but I have a broke wire that goes to the "down" switch as you can see in the picture.  The end of the wire is still in the connector.

Where do I get the tool to take this end out of the connector?I have seen them before @ work but I can't find one now.

And how do I put a new end on it?

Technically, you need a molex remover and some new molex pins for the size molex connector you're using, both easily available from bob roberts.

A much harder solution is with a jewelers screwdriver, you can bend the tiny pins holder the connector in, and pull the connector out, bend the even tinier crimp holding the wire on, remove the old wire, and crimp the new wire back in. Then bend the pins back out, and insert the connector back into the molex.

Not that hard all in all, it's just VERY TINY pieces of metal.

You can get a .093 Molex removal tool @ Radio Shack.

I went to Radio Shack and explained what I needed and the little guy just stared at me with a blank face and said " I'll go ask the manager". He come back and said "He said if we had it, it would be with the tools, here" and pointed down to where the crimpers and stuff were.

Everytime I go in there they have no idea what I'm talking about, weather its capacitors or this!!

Now, if you need a Direct Dish or a cell phone, then they are MR. INFORMATIVE!!!!

Man the piss me off.Just my rant.

Is this what I need?

Or I will check out Bob Roberts and see what he has got.

I just use a needle and push the metal anchors in and pull out the connector.  Do what I need to do and click it back in.  I really don't see the need for a specialty tool for this, but if it makes you feel more comfortable, go for it.  :)

Yeah, that's the tool.

WitchBoard: it's a little more difficult with molex pins.  I think you're thinking of the small .156 pins which come out fine with a pin.  .093 round pins you need the tool.  You *can* do it, but the tool makes it 10X easier.

I tried this with jewelers screwdrivers and couldn't get the stupid thing out, I'll give it another try............

Midway uses all Tyco/AMP brand connectors in their cabinets NOT Molex---they are very different connectors. Midway uses the AMP "Universal MATE-N-LOK" connectors.

Here are the Mouser stock numbers you need to buy from Mouser Electronics (www.mouser.com):

571- 3505471 Pin, male (9 cents each)

571-3188511 Contact removal tool ($43.99)

571-905461 Crimper tool ($187.50)

AMP brand connectors have traditionally been much more expensive than all other manufacturers (way overpriced in my opinion). You might check with Bob Roberts to see if he has this stuff cheaper.
