Ipac help?
« on: July 09, 2009, 11:25:55 pm »
well, I'm working on my MAME cabinet.
got my controls wired, and... nothing.
so i thought "meh, i must've just done something retarded. i'll check my connections."
nothing.
I plug in a keyboard through the passthru, and nothing from that.
I plug in the same keyboard directly in, and it works fine.
anyone have a clue as to what's wrong?

I'm using a ps/2 Ipac 2 player model.
windows xp sp3
.22 gauge wire with quick disconnects connected with a daisy chain ground and dedicated connections to the "NO" point.

Are you using USB or PS2?

Are you using a USB adapter from somewhere else?

Make sure that the connections are plugged all the way in.

I had a similar issue with mine, it turns out the issue was the cable wasnt pushed all the way in.

Also try with a single button.

Is this a new or old IPAC?

Can you take a photo of the wires going in?

When you boot up the PC, does it detect the keyboard?

Using ps/2

no

I get the green light on the IPAC, so that tells me that the cable to the PC is secure, but I'm still checking the connections to the individual buttons.

the Ipac is from 2007, just had it laying around.

single button isn't working either.

pic will come

If you have only soft screwed the wires in just do a single button and ground, plug her in and boot the computer, see if at least the keyboard is recognised and if it is open up notepad and click away see if you get some results

Generally the computer wont start up if it doesnt detect any keyboard (unless it is a laptop)

It usually beeps and says "No keyboard found"

However, if it is booting. Open up notepad and see if you cna hit keys on the keyboard and they are recorded. The iPac has a pass through so should be fine.

If it isnt, we know the issue is between the iPac and the computer

Also plug the keyboard into the computer by itself and test if it works,

You should also be able to check under the Hardware properties/profile to see if a keyboard is present

if the light on the ipac is green, then it is getting power from the computer.

Do you have another keyboard you can try, and do you have another cable for Ipac to computer you can try?

Also do you have another computer you can quickly plug it into to try?

ok if it works on your other computer that is a good sign.

As for where to go from here I am not sure. Contact the guys at ultimarc they may have some clues. My guess is there is a keyboard driver that is intefering, mayb try to identify and download a new one?

load up a dos 6.2 or win98 start up disk floppy or on usb stick to load up orginal microsoft dos dont worry about every thing else unplug or just use c-mos options for none on youre big c and d drive
then boot to floppy of normal dos when it gets to dos just type this
copy con com1
then push & hold it down alt then push
P then youl see a ipaq menu then pick youre inputs button default to mame
i programmed mine for 3 5 in same instance so you can push either 3 or 5 for same as 3 or 5 so if you push 5 it also does a 3 if you push a 3 it does a 5 too this is cause i used to use old verison of mame for asteroids and new version for dkong...
then I cant remember how to exit meny but i think it self explaines.
also there is a extra pins header witch you can hook leds to for atari asteroids type buttons witch light up w red leds for start buttons...
also good luck.
