Can i create a new Area 51 hard drive?
« on: July 18, 2009, 03:00:45 pm »
My area 51 hard drive seems to have gone wrong.

Can i just use any hard drive and burn the data from mame or something? Does anyone have any info on what i can do?

Uhh... You can but I don't know how.

However I'm CERTIAN that I've seen someone onthis forum tell someone how to copy a A51 CHD to an HD or even to a CompactFlash card on an IDE adaptor to use in a real A51 cab.  So I'm certian that you can find what you seek.

Well, you are in luck.  Here's a pdf copy from mame.net:
http://mamedev.org/misc/cax2009.pdf
It's from California Extreme presentation "12 Things You Didn’t Know You
Could Do With MAME"

Page 11 and 12 are pages you are looking for:

Maybe.  But that's a whole adaptor rig.  CompactFlash is electrically identical to the IDE interface, so IDE-CF adaptors do nothing but convert the pinouts to fit each other.

Could be worth a shot if you have the funds to risk the attempt.

Those IDE to SD adapters are pricey.  I'd just go with a CF->IDE.  It's cheaper and most likely.  I'm using a CF it the heart of my mame cabinet and it boots lightning quick.

Have you created a new hard drive or just re-installed the old one? If it's down to mechanical failure or damaged sectors then re-installing will be no good. I it is a new disk try doing it again, or like peale said, it could be a bad or incorrect chd. Re-download it from somewhere.

If you are using another hard drive, you could try moving the jumper to proper position for capacity limit.  It will limit the drive size to 32 GB.  Not sure about your system, but it would make sense that it would not read full capacity of the new drives.  You will have to reformat after you move the jumper.

And do both boards show the SAME graphics problem with the new drive?

go on ebay they sell compact flash to ide converter pcbs I have used one w a 32M stick to boot to mspacman.
now that microcenter lowered the price of 32M or 64M sticks all you need to do is take a western digital boot copy disk for a new ide drive and boot to the copy one disk to the new disk utility and choose the compact flash or regular ide drive and copy 1 to 1 then make shure you have the same jumper i assume its master cause i think they said to leave it on master if using in arcade they said they tried laptop drives but they broke to mutch and all you need to do is copy the drive partition like a ghost image so if a compact flash drive works then so would a drive as long as the image was the same ..
they sell images on compact flash w ide to compact flash pcb w cpac drive and image and pcb for under $100 on ebay once you get image then youre set I assume its just same as the mame haddrive image but you would be better off using a working drive to copy to a bigger one.
the only thing is the encryption chips would proably look for a volume lable matching the original drive it had as its image matching the encryption chip IE if you copy a working machines drive and copy drive works on original pcb arcade board then you must also copy those encryption chips too cause the image goes w those encryption chips witch would be obvibous.. but since i seen area 51 and blitz pcbs using a compact flash to ide pcb and a compact flash drive and they show it working then i assume it sould be easy fix for you I also seen drives for said games on ebay for sale as repair item they seem to be small drives under 4 gig.

witch type of compact flash drive do you have in the cf to ide converter pcb and witch COMPUTER MOTHER BOARD type are you using in witch you get socalled lightning speed?????/
my motherboards are slow but one 32M rca lyra drive goes fast I havent been able to test my new 1g stick yet cause I cant find my dos apci soundblaster driver for dos but i assume if i had a 16g compact flash drive if exist i could just load xp onto it!... then just use mame32 v.67
-skip_disclaimer -skip_gameinfo -noscanlines -soundcard 1 -cheat
if needed -rol1

GOOD LUCK. :notworthy: :blah:  ;) :) ;D

It wouldnt boot, and made a quiet clicking sound, so i gess mechanical failure?

that drive is ---fouled up beyond all recognition--- just get a new copy from ebay.! or someone else on here all you need is to use the western digital utility that comes w new drives to copy from old to new one remember to just format the new bigger blank drive and use same master slave or cable select jumpers and the best results on copy like the western digital utilty is to use same exact type and size drive to start w to see if it works then onto bigger drives..
if you get a new chd image on a new drive be shure to get its matching security chip copied too cause it has to match image it came w thats proabably keeping you from fixing game since the game is not in syndication anymore I wouldnt worry about the security encryption chip being copyied w its matching harddrive or cflash drive image GOOD Luck.
also I just figured out how golden tee roms work!.. gouge I reverse engineered it just thinking about it and seeing encryption chips on ebay.
HMM I could get into these types of problems and probably cash in and aslo have fun doing it I would not make a lot of $ not enough to get anyone company mad at me but I could figure out how to copy a hid drive if it was an original one w its chips and then the copy would probably boot.
I need to try it on a xbox original old one I know it would work w mod chip and there i hear is a new mod chip for the xbox arcade that lets the mod chip be turned on and off and clones the old one to make microsoft ignore then mod chip cause its hidden to them when online and when offline it lets you change games w bigger drive.. SO I bet you could upgrade a 120G drive to a 320G drive using the western digital ontrack utility..
I did it w xp pro corp oem vol licence version of xp and MSDN version of xp and it worked the machine thought it was the older drive once then i rebooted and it locked up the second time but then i repaired xp load and it worked again this was because i switch ed computer mother boards and xp got confused about boot sector info it wasnt the copy that caused the problem. so you should be ok to just get nother drive w its encryption chip and copy both! or just use the drive w a copy of encryption chip from working board set just copy drive image/partition w utilty then copy its matching security/encryption chip.
I did this wout drive on arkanoid I had 2 boards one w encryption chip and one w out i swaped copied a rom w the tatio (c) and put it into the bootleg one that said tayto and it worked then when putting it back into the original taito board it got static and i think it screwed the encryption chip up cause now it just counts down and wont boot.
both boards are not taito boards!! the bootleg tayto board still runs the ecryption chip is just a weird motorola chip hard to find i found one but number is weird it has window in it but since number is weird i dont know how to burn image to it w eeprom burner but since i blew it up and screwed the image up on it before i copyied it there is no reason to care.
but the original taito version worked on tayto board once but i forgot witch chip had copy on it and probably lost it the tayto chip board still works the way it was when i got it. so if i did that you could copy a harddrive image...
