How many of you have a "Video" juekbox?
« on: May 05, 2004, 05:10:55 pm »
I was thinking a video jukebox would be much better than just an audio (mp3) jukebox since you could appreciate the song by seeing the actual related video and artist.

However, I know this is going to take a lot of time to get a lot  of videos so I wanted to make sure this was worth it.   Basically, do most videos have good sound/picture or would I simply be wasting my time gathering them just to be disappointed.   Also, how many songs could you fit on a 120Gb harddrive just so I have an idea what the space limitations would be .......

Thanks

My next major project will be a video jukebox with probably 2 LCD monitors.  After building quite a few MAME machines and a few MP3 jukes, I've really wanted to get a video juke done.

So I've spent the last 6 months downloading over 1000 music videos.  I could overflow a 120GB HD with videos when the time comes.

I'll gladly share my video collection if anyone would like to trade.  My MP3 collection is lagging behind, so I'm open to a major videos for MP3 trade.

And no, I don't have a list of my videos....they're grouped in to VH1 Classics, Classic Non-VH1, newer, Country and concerts.

How would one work?
My cabinet's set up for mp3 and video (just a handful of clips at the moment), but with audio, you don't have to worry about the current song getting in the way of your browsing :). How would you queue up fullscreen songs?

I'd have to see about 1 screen displaying the video and the other screen for song/video selection.

If you happen to find jukebox software which does the dual screen this way, then let me know please......

I know "Virtual Jukebox" can utilize dual monitors but I thought that it could only display the video and selection in one screen while song lyrics could be in the other.   Maybe I am wrong though....

Virtual Music Jukebox can display video and/or lyrics in one monitor while browsing for music/videos in the other.

One a single monitor setup...VMJ will display a video full screen, when the user wants to browse for additional tracks, the video is hidden for a specific amount of time before it returns to full-screen.

Are their screenshots of the Virtual Music Jukebox utilizing dual monitor output somewhere?   At the VMJ website I only see the single monitor display.   If a screenshot does not exist yet, then maybe you could post a pic here?  This might get me to incorporate dual monitors in my jukebox design.....

What types of video media does VMJ play (mpg, avi, etc...).  Basically, can I have various types or do they all need to be MPG type?  Also, I am assuming my VMJ collection can consist of MP3 and Video files together and that VMJ will simply play a song or video depending on the type .... correct?

thanks

Correct,  VMJ will list videos and tracks under the same album.  If a video is selected, it will recognize this and play it in the second monitor.  No screen shots are available at the moment...simply picture two monitors side by side...one of them showing exactly what the single monitor display (as seen on the vmj website), and a vido playing full screen (maximized with no task bar) in the other monitor.

So the video itself would have to be selected to be played?  That's fine, but I pictured an option that would allow a person to select a song, and then play a video if one was associated with it.

Guess it doesn't really matter since I'll probably categorize the videos and group them together as much as possible anyway.

There are a couple of different ways to go about this.  VMJ allows you to set up as many "Music Libraries" as you like.  You can categorize your music/videos to your desire.  Ie "Rock Music", "Country", "Rap", etc.... or "Scott's Music", "The Wife's Music"...or even "Music Videos", "Audio Tracks", etc...

You can also combine audio and video...for example:

My Music.mp3 and My Music.mpg can exist under the same album.  When these are added to the music library, you can give them anyname you want:

ie:

My Music - Audio
My Music - Video

so they may appear in the track list something like:

01 My Music - Audio
02 My Music - Video

From the jukebox main selection screen simply select the one you want to add it to the que.

-Hope this helps.

I've got Cyberpunks Virtual Jukebox software set up with my home theater.

I have set it up on a machine with 2 video cards, one being an ATI all in wonder 16 (old card, but works for this purpose).  So I can select the music and videos on the computer monitor screen (which will eventually be a touch screen, just not there yet).  The videos output to my 55" TV.  Sound is handled through my Home Theater system (6 channel, 5 subs, 1000+ watts, sounds great).  If song is chosen, the album artwork shows up on the TV screen.  You can even cycle through other picture files if you desire.

It looks and sounds great.  Figure about 40-50MB for a good, high quality video (they are all between 3-5 minutes long).  Anything smaller and you can see the artifacts.  High Quality Divx videos look great, but my TV is not HDTV, a higher quality set will show more artifacts.

It runs off of WMP I believe, everything that I have thrown at it (mpg, avi, wmv, asf) it will run, as long as you have the codec.

No idea about .mov though, don't use it

How about .vob and .m2v?

I know you can simply rename .m2v files to be .mpg and they work fine.    I am almost certain you can do the same renaming thing with .vob files.....

.vob and .m2v should work as long as you have the right codecs of Windows Media Player.

This jukebox will do video and audio... works in multi zones as well.

If you have certain video cards with a Vide out.. I believe the Nivida cards work best.. You basically the VGA Out goes to your monitor.. or touch screen.  Then you take the SVIDEO or Composit out of the Nivideo card.. Since it uses winamp you can change the winamp setting for those video cards to say "play video through SVIDEO OUTPUT".  I think this is in the plugin section under output devices.

Anyway.. it works great.. you can have a single PC loaded up with music videos.. use a touch screen monitor..coming off the VGA jack  and have the video routed out the SVIDEO.

I use it in my house hooked up to a TV Modulator.. so I have a inwall touch screen the the video is feed to all the TV's in my house. Works great when having a party.. all I play is music videos..

You might want to check it out..  :D

It's been running for over 10 months with no problems.. feeding video out the SVIDEO and VGA to the display.  With about 100 music videos..  It uses winamp so the winamp vid player is not the greatest when in full screen but it does work as described.  Here's picture of it in a cabinet.  It it's more advance program unlike a common media player so you might just have some setup issues if your having problems with it.  If you join the support forum you can request feature enhancements.
