Check these out: Single Player Desktop Control Panel
« on: May 03, 2004, 10:04:58 pm »
I completed my full size cab from Lusid's design many moons ago....took me awhile to complete the bezel but I finally got that done in the last few months.

Recently, my girlfriend's kids have been buggin' me to get them a desktop singler player panel built so they can enjoy the classics when they are not around my house (probably because I said I would many months ago).

I completed one and was about to start another when I ran across this:

http://www.redoctane.com/joystick-xbox.html

which is wired for an xbox but could be mod'ed to work with PC using an XBOX --> USB adaptor or easily hacked.

For the price, I decided to go ahead and order one to see how well it works.

If the controls are not up to par, I figure I can always gut it and use the box for my own happ controls and interface.

Thought I would pass the link along.

If you click on "Joysticks" then scroll all the way to the bottom of the page, redoctane offers empty pre-cut cases for $20 or with all Happ parts for $50.  It's a sweet deal.

I'd spring for the xtra $3 (total$23) and get the box filled with an interface, buttons, stick and wire..heck, for the price of a couple buttons you get it all... If it isn't up to par for us adults it's still perfect for kids! :-)
Pull a year and a half strike- it's over 4eva..
besides, WHL rocks!

My thoughts exactly.

I orginally saw a post on Ebay for one of their gutted panels and another complete unit, went to the web store and found the xbox units on sale for $23.

I'll post a short review after I receive and have a chance to check it out.

Thought I would post a followup to this thread.....

Controllers came in, xbox-usb adaptors acquired, and after getting past a "short between my chair and the keyboard" on configuring joypads for use in mame, not a bad deal for $23.00 + shipping.

Note: The joystick and buttons on these are not up to par with what I am accustomed to (Happ Controls) but would be fine for younger kids (for which these were intended).

The buttons have the switch built into the button, not cherry switches or leafs. The joys do have what appears to be a restrictor plate underneath so that they could be adjusted to 4-way and perhaps even 2-way if you so desired. A little clunky for my tastes.

I happened to have some spare Happ buttons and joys leftover from previous projects for myself and friends, a lazy Friday night on my hands, so I went ahead and swapped them out.

There's a single button on either side left/right which I wasn't aware of from the online photo and using a joymap utility I found in a different thread, was able to setup and configure Visual Pinball as well. Works like a champ.

All in all, not a bad deal. Granted, I could have gotten the blank box for $20 but having the prewired XBOX PCB is worth the extra $3. Add on some quick disconnects and wal-la, a nice little single player CP.
