Leaf switch panel
« on: April 28, 2004, 04:53:43 pm »
Does anyone have any pics of an all-classic style, all-leaf-switch (or mostly leaf-switch, or a classic games) control panel or cab?  I am going to make one, but am having a hard time finding examples.

Well, they look identical on the top.

Take a look at my "A whole new kind of extended panel" thread. Half the buttons shown are leaf, half are microswitch, and they joysticks I used are available in both configurations.

I am thinking more of a desktop control panel that uses a 4-way, an 8-way and a few buttons. (or some combination of that)

Like PaigeOliver says- from the top, you probably won't be able to tell a leaf button from a microswitch..
Underneath though, you may need to do a bit more planning. Where a ms button is pretty much confined to the 1-1/4" diameter, the leaf buttons have a leg that sticks out. IIRC the leaf assembly on the buttons I have sticks out about 1-1/2" inch from the circular "button" portion

Shouldnt be too tough, unless youre trying to cram a lotof buttons in the space

I think you are mis-understanding me.  I am looking for a "Classic" game button and joystick layout not a 3x2 button layout.  I plan to have a 3x2 on my fighting game setup.  Additionally, has anyone incorporated Asteroid buttons in special placement on a multi-use control panel?  Maybe on the left of the joystick?

That was just a quick sketch to show that using leaf buttons will take up extra space underneath, that you may need to plan for. The 3x2 layout seemed the most condensed

Theres no differences between a panel using microswitch buttons and one using leaf buttons, or mixing and using both. If you notice the 2 sets of red buttons in the pic, from the top they are the same distance, position, etc.

If you're simply looking for example layouts, check out www.klov.com Most of the games have images of the control panels. Or you shouldbe able to find a control panel artwork pack, i think www.mameworld.net has those

If you really want to do a "classic" panel, then just go on ebay search the coin op area for "Willis", get a willis overlay for some random game. Use that overlay to build a panel, and it will already have the layout there for you.

I own Willis overlays for Defender, Q*Bert and Asteroids.
