Original machine with mame inside
« on: April 22, 2004, 10:31:06 am »
If someone was to take a original cabinet and replace the dead original boards and replace them with a comp. But still keep the outside of the cab original. How does that sound?
Curls in the squat rack !?!?!

Well, if the boards are definitely dead, and the outside of the cab / the monitoir / the controls etc. remain totally untouched, then it's really a kind of restoration job - with the added advantage that you can play other games on the cab too (within the limitations of the original control panel, of course)

I was thinking of doing this for my next project--on the outside it looks like an original but with swappable panels for mame useage--I just have to find a suitable original cab now for a good price.  I wish I could have talked demon-seed into a trade--ah well.
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

Sure, it's what I'm doing with my Galaxian.

I have seen that done quite a bit.

Good candidates include
all vectors
70s black and white titles (many are really rare, and boardsets are largely unavailable for these games).
Anything with a $200+ boardset.
Games like Berzerk with battery acid issues.

I personally own a Defender that this has been done to. I will be going that route with my Amazing Maze now that it has been "de-mamed".

I also own several other possible candidates for this (Sprint 2, Stargate, Atari Basketball, Battlezone, etc).
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

It's pretty easy to do.  If oyu have a jamma cab (if not wire it as jamma) get a computer and put in an arcadevga and jpac.  Pretty much plug and play then.

It would almost be necessary if you wanted a working Pole Position!

That is what I did with an old Xevious cabinet.  Now it plays Xevious just fine (and 4000+ others too).

I did my Dragon Spirit a couple of days ago.
Setup arcadeos and advancemame, plugged in the jpac and
emulation goodness. Dragon Spirit has 2 buttons on each side (2 of each button) So it plays every thing pretty well.
To go back to dragon spirit all I have to do is open the front door and unplug the jpac and plug the board back in.

Sweetness.

The other good thing is I put it in the kitichen where I work.
(The boss likes the toys I drag in.)
