robotron ipac help
« on: April 21, 2004, 12:40:17 am »
I'm using an ipac with mame32.  I've built a control pannel with 2 joysticks and 3 buttons per side.  How can I get Robotron to work with this setup?  2 player games work great, but this setup does not allow for one player/2 joystic play.  Any help would be great.

Did you configure MAME for just this game (Tab key while in the game)?  You will need to go in and configure the 2nd joystick to be the "fire" controller.

the'tab' control menu for robotron can be a bit confusing the first time you set up joystick left and joystick right and when it says "right up" that means right jstick up, and when it sayd "left right" that means left jstick right

i took me a few minutes to figure this out the first time, but it does work

Robotron, Food Fight, Black Widow, Crazy Climber (1 & 2) and Battle Zone (There may be others) all use two joysticks.

They all use the:
P1_JOYSTICKRIGHT_UP     "KEYCODE_I | JOYCODE_1_BUTTON2"
P1_JOYSTICKRIGHT_DOWN   "KEYCODE_K | JOYCODE_1_BUTTON3"
P1_JOYSTICKRIGHT_LEFT   "KEYCODE_J | JOYCODE_1_BUTTON1"
P1_JOYSTICKRIGHT_RIGHT  "KEYCODE_L | JOYCODE_1_BUTTON4"
P1_JOYSTICKLEFT_UP      "KEYCODE_E | JOYCODE_1_UP"
P1_JOYSTICKLEFT_DOWN    "KEYCODE_D | JOYCODE_1_DOWN"
P1_JOYSTICKLEFT_LEFT    "KEYCODE_S | JOYCODE_1_LEFT"
P1_JOYSTICKLEFT_RIGHT   "KEYCODE_F | JOYCODE_1_RIGHT"

Instead of the normal:
P1_JOYSTICK_UP          "KEYCODE_UP | JOYCODE_1_UP"
P1_JOYSTICK_DOWN        "KEYCODE_DOWN | JOYCODE_1_DOWN"
P1_JOYSTICK_LEFT        "KEYCODE_LEFT | JOYCODE_1_LEFT"
P1_JOYSTICK_RIGHT       "KEYCODE_RIGHT | JOYCODE_1_RIGHT"

P2_JOYSTICK_UP          "KEYCODE_R | JOYCODE_2_UP"
P2_JOYSTICK_DOWN        "KEYCODE_F | JOYCODE_2_DOWN"
P2_JOYSTICK_LEFT        "KEYCODE_D | JOYCODE_2_LEFT"
P2_JOYSTICK_RIGHT       "KEYCODE_G | JOYCODE_2_RIGHT"

I changed the defaults for the JOYSTICKRIGHT's and JOYSTICKLEFT's to be the same as my P1_JOYSTICK and P2_JOYSTICK settings.

I assume you need this for Karate Champ too.

I'm not familiar with Karate Champ.

I looked at the control panel image, and it has 4 joysticks (2 per Player) so you would need to setup the P2_JOYSTICKRIGHT's and P2_JOYSTICKLEFT's as well.  These are set to NONE by default.

Karate Champ uses 4 -ways, but it's a similar setup.

Thanks to everyone who helped me out.  It's working perfectly.  Honestly I did not know how to define the keys.  You saved me a lot of time.  I just finishing a budget cabinet.  It was a Neo Geo 2 player cabinet with nothing-no control pannel, bezel, coin door pannel or back.  Just a skeleton.  I supposed I could have built my own, but it was free.  Droped in 21"  pc monitor (used IBM $85) and my old k6-2 550 mhz, add ipac and now I'm back in 1983.

GGKoul,
I was 14 when Karate Champ was popular.   I never got too into that one.  I would hang out at our local Stop and Go market (it's like 7-11) and play Dig Dug, Donkey Kong and Stargate.  I remeber my friend would push hard at the bottom of the plexi on Donkey Kong and stick his arm down to the back of the coin slots to get free play.  99 credits and we be there all day...
