Two arcade buttons with same function
« on: April 19, 2004, 02:05:46 am »
I want to use my Saitek 550 to make an arcade desktop controller, but I have one question:  Since I want to keep the flight stick with both buttons on my controller, can I wire regular, microswitch pushbuttons to the same spot as the flight stick buttons and have them both serve the same purpose simultaniously?

Yes.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Assuming your using an IPAC just run the normally open leads from each switch to the same key assigment on the terminal strip.

Actually, I am using a the Saitek 550 to interface my computer.  I do not have the $$ to get a fancy encoder, however, if I can figure out my joystick hacks, I might consider creating my own encoder from a keyboard...

can the same approach be used to duplicate the player 1 and 2 joysticks and controls onto a long end of a cocktail cabinet to be able to play horizontal games side-by-side?

let me try to explain...

i want to build a cocktal cab based on the regular pacman cocktail cab (it is basically rectangular)  player 1 & 2 sit facing each other at the two "short ends" taking turns to play. the monitor is mounted in the table so it appears vertically orientated to each player. Each player will have one joystick and 3 buttons in this position. This setup allows games for vertical monitors to be played.

To enable play of horizontal games i want to also have both players able to sit side by side on one "long side" of the table. this will enable beat-em-ups to be played. each player will have 1 joystick and 6 buttons.

here is an example of the kind of thing i want to do...

i assume that i can have this CP setup using an IPAC2 as setup is still effectively only a 2 joystick machine?

Yeah, you could do that.
