Dance Dance Revolution?
« on: April 19, 2004, 01:35:24 am »
Ok, my girlfriend has asked me if MAME does Dance Dance Revolution or something similiar.  She also asked about the dance pads.  Personally, I have no interest in that game or owning a dance pad but you know how this stuff goes.  She let me put a full sized arcade game in the house, so now I have to do what she wants.  Sheesh.

Anyway, what's the current state of this genre and what's the controller situation like as far as MAME support?

Hantarex Polo 15KHz
Sapphire Radeon HD 7750 2GB (GCN)
GroovyMAME 0.197.017h_d3d9ex
CRT Emudriver & CRT Tools 2.0 beta 13 (Crimson 16.2.1 for GCN cards)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel Core i7-4790K @ 4.8GHz
ASUS Z87M-PLUS Motherboard

Though i'm not knowledgable in the area myself, the site here seems to have some good links over at http://www.arcadecontrols.com/arcade.htm  just scroll down to the dance pad section.
I miss Retroblast :(

Ok I just finished my cab, I'm about to post pics.

you want STEPMANIA.com

It is amazing and it will let you use dancepads with the right usb adapter. I've been playing on my cab like mad.

Stepmania, or Dance with Intensity (though DWI isn't as "arcade perfect" as SM is).  I'm using the LevelSix Version 2.1 pads with the Super Dual Box adapter.  Works great.  I'm looking into building my own pads for use with the PC version of Pump it Up Prex 3.

I'm waiting for somone to build the ultimate Rhythmcade and post it here.  Reversible pads for use with DDR/PIU, Pop'n'music controllers, Beatmania Controllers, possibly drummania or guitar freaks controllers, a PS/2 with EyeToy:Groove, and a Dreamcast with Samba De Amigo.  Everything feeding into a large Amp, with "yooge" speakers and Blinkenlights.  Unfortunately, I don't have to space to build such a beast.

If you're just going for cheap and useable. You can get PS2 dance pads for around $10 apiece, and then use a PS2 to USB adapter to connect to the computer.

I sell a dual USB adapter, and a new single USB adapter from my online store, and ebay store that both work well with dance games (The N64/PS2 adapter, and the quad adapter don't work as well with dance games from what I've been told)

You can build your own pads for your cabinet.  You can even make them a bit easier if you have an i-pac or similar in your cabinet already.  Then you don't need any special adapter, you can just hook the pad into the i-pac the same as the joystick would.  I stuck an rj-45 connector on the pad I built and one on the bottom of my cab by the kickplate, so I can hook up the dance pad with an ethernet cable and disconnect it easy when I want to play something else.

I'll vouch for the dual USB adapter, since I bought it from your store.

In a couple years, man, just a couple years.
Who am I kidding?  In a couple years I'll be broke.
But anyways, someday I WILL own and make a cabinet for at least DDR, PIU, Pop'N, Beatmania I/IIDX, GuitarFreaks, maybe Drummania and Keyboardmania and Para Para and Samba.

Oh, and I recommend the Riptide design at http://www.digitaltorque.com/mydancepad/
All 9 panels are independent, meaning that you can build the 4 DDR arrows, and add solo arrows later, then the remaining PIU panels.  Or the other way around.  If you didn't know already.
There is SO a spoon.

As said before, Stepmania. Use Bittorrent to get the bumper packs off ddr.uk (I think? or ddruk.??? search google) to get all of the arcade songs. THen look around more for the videos for all the songs, etc. It takes a while to get it all set up perfectly though.

Why aren't you at all itnterested in the game? I thought it was ridiculous and I had no interest at first too, but after trying it then buying it it's a lot of fun (once you get past the super easy beginning levels)

The problem with doing it dual with PIU is that the PIU corner panels are 11'x13', not 11'x11' like DDR panels, so you have to do a separate pad for PIU.

Sorry for not getting back sooner.

I'm about to post pics. My cab is done. I have a drumset, guitar, dancepads, maracas, para para beatmania (looking for a better emu that's pretty),stepmania, I'm hoping to add karoke and eye toy or a pc equivalent.

I have them all connected via my dual gunner psx to usb adapter and all hidden under my cp with my 5 port usb.
