Joystick Questions
« on: April 16, 2004, 09:54:26 am »
Ok I am sure this is a common post and if there is a thread that will give me all the info I need please redirect me.  I am going to build a 4-player cocktail cabinet and I am overwhelmed by the choices in joysticks. Money is no problem but I want the best constructed and best feeling.  I was looking at the ultimarc.com ones because of the 4-8 way switch but that is really just gravy. Please let me know, any information is helpful.
Thanks,
MasTequila

p.s. I have read all the stuff on joysticks that is already on this site.

Everyone seems to have a different opinion of what sticks have the "best feel".

I am personally partial to old Wico leaf switch joys, and the newer (still old though), Wico "microleaf" joysticks.

Also, try reading through the forum, as this thread is started every couple days.

Ive used Happs Supers and Ultimarc J-Stiks. The J-Stiks are much nicer in my opinion. If I went Happs I would def. get the competitions next time.

I have tried:

Happ Ultimates (8 way)
Happ Super (4 / 8 way)
T-Stick Plus (4 / 8 way)
Sanwa (8 way)
Wico micro (8 way)
Wico leaf (8 way)
Wico leaf (4 way)

My preferrence is the Wico Leafs. They have a nice feel, smooth action, springs back to center, tension seems better, and they are quiet.

Read the rest of the posts, we all have our preffered sticks.

I like the T-Stick plus and Wico's best. For a cocktail I'd go for the T-Stick plus though since I doubt you'll have enough space to put both a Wico 4-way AND 8-way on there.

If money is no problem you should just go an buy both though. As Paige says, it's very personal. Some people dislike the T-sticks because of the short throw and that's exactly the thing I like about it!

There is an ebay seller called nicade and he is selling tons of NOS Wico stuff. I bought myself a couple of different models. For instance the 4-way Wico leaf NOS with $24.99 buy it now

And there is someone selling 8-way Wico's in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum.

What exactly does N.O.S. stand for and what does it mean?  Is WICO N.O.S. better than WICO without N.O.S.?  Arghh

I believe N.O.S. stands for New Old Stock

Usually means the unit is out of production, but they still have "unopened" "new" ones available

Yeah, so these are basically "new" (as in unused) but they are "old" since they were produced a while back. There are no completely new ones so NOS is the best you can get right now.

If I were building the cabinet you described, I would put in (in order of preference):

T-stiks (for their switchability)
Wico 8-ways (for their great feel)
Happs Supers

in that order.
