Joystick length + controls
« on: April 14, 2004, 05:26:15 pm »
Hello,

I'm wondering what the height from CP or dust cover to the bottom of the ball on Japanese joysticks is. I need to route out some wood from the control panel because the stick is too short right now but I'm not sure how much to route. I think maybe around 1/4"?

Also, I dont really have space for a 7-button layout (for neogeo) -- do many NeoGeo games make use of all 4 buttons? Are they significantly worse with just a 6-button SF layout?

THanks
Alex

If you mean J-Stik style sticks, then I believe they are intended for metal or very thin panels, so I would route out as much as you can without sacrificing the strength of your panel...just don't go so thin your panel breaks.

Many NeoGeo games use 4 buttons, but you can just use a different button - many people here play NeoGeo games with a 6-button layout I believe.  I think you'll be fine as long as you're not a total NeoGeo purist :)

I don't think any of the GOOD Neo Geo games use more than 3, and when I say good, I mean "non-fighting".
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

I have JStick/Sanwa-style joysticks. Their shafts are much too long if only mounted to metal -- the Japanese joysticks are only supposed to rise about the same height as the ball, not higher than the height of the ball.

Thanks about NeoGeo. I will be playing some fighters on it I think, but I guess they're not crucial (and should work with a squaer button layout as part of my 6)

Getting ready to drill the CP tomorrow morning at school, so any last minute input is appreciated...

Well I don't know if it helps but I mounted a couple of J-Stiks to (non-routed) 15mm MDF for my test CP and they generally feel too short (good for some games tho).  I reckon if you could route down to 10mm or slightly less you'd be OK.  I make 1/4" = 6.25mm, I probably wouldn't go any thinner than that.
