Hey guys!

I've never been to one of these auctions at Starburst.   Do they generally attract a lot of people?  Also do they have empty  and or broken cabs for auction as well?  I'd like to get myself a cab instead of building from scratch, but I have no clue as to how low the prices start?

Sorry for all the questions but any info would be appreciated!!
   Cheers!

Menace maybe best to answer this, as he been to a few of these...

At the last auction there was 4 or 5 "crappy" cabs.  And they went for under $100.

First few (like 5 or so) are usually fairly crappy and get about 25$ depending on whether they are working.  This time of year there could be as many as 150 people there or half that amount--its pretty hit or miss.  Its fun to kick tires (or cabs in this case) and you might get lucky.  95% of the cabs are typically working with a conversion game of sorts inside--dedicated originals are rare.  The last few have had lots of pins so if thats another interest its a great place to get one.

I would love to go, especially for the pins, but I'm going to miss this one becasue of work training I can't get out of.

I guess I'll catch the next one.

FYI:

As I learned at the last auction... you need over $1000 to purchase a nice pin.  As there's LOTS of dealers at these auctions looking to get a pin to flip it on ebay.

Crap, I'd love to go but.....duty calls.

I believe Starburst sells Happ stuff, so its a great opportunity for local guys to buy without the exchange rate / duty / shipping probs.

Anyone want to pick me up a marquee retainer?  ;D

I already have a nice pin in my gameroom, I'd be looking for parts or older machines to restore. But right now I'm hunting for stuff to do my mame cabinet anyhow. :)

I have a 1990 Data East Back To the Future. Actually picked it up off e-bay from a dealer in St Catherines about a year ago. I still haven't completely shopped it yet, been too busy with work and my new house, but it plays nice. I think once my showcase cab is up and running MAME (so I have something else to play) I'm going to strip the pin and have the playfield clearcoated.

Edit p.s. - edited for spelling, I really shouldn't post before I've had some go-juice in the morning. *lol*

I managed to pick up a 1991 Data East TMNT machine for 500$ a few auctions ago.  Part of the Dot Matrix Display is out, but if you can live with that, it was a great steal for 500$.  They had some particularly crappy ones (both in condition and "fun-ness" go for much more).

The key to pins is that the serious pinheads kind of frown upon certain makes (DataEast and Gottlib in particular) because they tend to have smaller rulesets and are themed.    With the exception of Guns&Roses, Rocky & Bullwinkle, and StarWars, the rest tend to go from much less then an equivalent year/condition/feature williams or stern machine.

I personally like the DE machines myself.

DE machines also seem to be harder to get game-specific parts for as well. But that's okay. I like the fact that DE machines are usualy a movie or some other "theme" kind of machines. I tend to gravitate to machines with a good 'fun' factor and good playability. That way when I get guests over playing it's easy for them to just step up and play and have fun without getting frustrated by having to try and complete different tasks to get anywhere with the game. Some of the pins on my wish list are Theater of Magic, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Looney Tunes themed machine I saw once. I think it's Bugs Bujny's Birthday BAsh, but I'm not 100% sure.

I showed up @ noon just to pick up some parts.  Had a look in and it was PACKED!!  It was too packed for me to walk from one end to other to look around.  It looked like that was @ 50-60 machines and @ 5 - 10 pins.

When I was in parts, I heard some people talking about people over paying at the auction.  So it looks like the bidding was high.  But I don't know for sure.

Yeah, when an auction is really packed over bidding tends to happen a lot. There were probably a lot of people there with a tax refund burning a hole in their pocket.
