super joystick diagonals
« on: July 19, 2002, 08:45:20 am »
Just got my super in the mail  :D   Now I had read about how sometimes the diagonals are non responsive and that the levels on the cherry switchs need to be bent upward a bit so that a diagonal move will trigger 2 switches at once.   I haven't mounted it yet, but from just messing with the stick a bit i can tell that I'll need to do this.    Is this extrememly common?  Can other who use supers share their experiences?   From reading the posts the super seems like the stick of choice....

Thanks!

I would suggest flipping the hourglass piece of plastic over first.  It is bigger on one end and is what hits the switches.  The joystick is made to switch from 4-way to 8-way.

Do not bend the metal actuators you will have problems making all of the diagonals react similar.  JustMichael is correct, flip the hourglass shaped plastic actuator to adjust diagonal sensitivity.

It's been my experience that flipping the actuator on the newer Supers only makes them less sensitive to diagonals (but they still register the diagonals).  This will work for you, since you are looking for an 8-way stick.

I would say, make sure the larger half of the hourglass shaped part is facing towards the joystick and just try out the stick before you bend anything.
It may turn out that it works just fine for you.
I have it and works pretty well execpt it is just a tad harder to find the diags than with my competition joystick.
I did do a modification though:
Just below the metal snap ring that snaps into the groove in the shaft, I placed a little o-ring to force the hourglass not to climb on top of the levers on the extreme diagonals.
You might not run into this problem, though.

Remember to try it out first and see how it feels.

Good luck.

I started with my supers in 8-way mode, and it seemed too sensitive to the diagonals, etc.
I've switched to the 4-way mode and found this to be the best for me.  It plays a lot better in games like donkey kong and the diagonals still work in 4 way mode.  You have to want to go diagonal to get them there, which I think is better.
In 8 way mode we were having problems getting combos to work in fighting games, etc. because the joystick kept registering diagonals even if we were trying to go u,d,l,r.  It was just too sensitive.
