MAME cab based on XBOX
« on: April 09, 2004, 02:51:51 pm »
Has anybody tried building a Mame cab using an XBOX?

I have heard that there is a version of Mame for the XBOX but can't find it for download.

I believe that Microsoft's lawyers have tried to kill it.

Anyone using it?  How does it compare to using regular PC hardware. Any problems/issue to be aware of?

It's called MAMEonX.

I would think that this would be easy to do.  Just hack the controllers for hooking up your control panel and everything else would be plug 'n' play.  Haven't seen it, though.
One word of warning when building a Mame cabinet, hook up the controls LAST!!!  If you don't, it will probably take you 3 - 6 additional months to finish the cabinet.  -JustMichael

Biggest problem is mame doesn't have enough ram to load about 70% of the games in mame.  Other xbox emus do a better job, but to give you and idea, newer neogeo titles and cps2 titles won't even load!  So anything newer than 1993-94 many or many not run.

Other issues include that fact that you can't rotate games ect.... basically 50% of mame's options are no longer configurable.  Not that this is a bad thing.... you just need to be aware.

Of course now the xbox is a mere 140 bucks, so There isn't any harm in playing around.

It has been fixed  some time ago they managed to program a virtual memory system in MAME so even the 80MB roms loads up...

Would it be worth modding your x-box and placing a larger hard drive in there to run MAME and other emulators, or is the PC still the way to go?  (from the prosepctive that the load times of newer MAME games are bearible on the x-box)

What would the quality look like of just a normal X-Box game like halo on an Arcade Monitor?

Modding isnt hard, you can buy non solder chips(Although I did solder cuz I wanted a differnt chip).Yeah I think its worth modding, you really dont need a larger drive though.8gb is enough for mame.I mean how many games will you REALLY be playing anyway...

Not sure on the arcade monitor part but  I use this vga box and a vga monitor, couldn't be any happier.
www.x2vga.com

I only play very few games anyway(just fighters) so I think I will install mameox tomorrow, load a game or 2 and post result  :)

I wanted to build my cabinet so I could also have an xbox working as well. However I don't know how to go about switching from a PC to the XBox and back outside of adding another set of RCA connectors to the TV and then using the TV's remote to switch back and forth between TV Inputs. I'd obviously rather not do it that way.

Are there any ideas as to how to make use MAME and Xbox together? I own a bunch of fighting games and I'd like to play them on the cabinet, but only if it's a realistic fix.

WEEEEEEEE,works great !! :D
As far as looks goes,I dont see ANY difference since I am running xbox using x2vga box.It looks EXACTLY like how it is on my computer.

Sure about that ?
Which version ?
I got the "0.79.1b"

And none of the CPS2 games load, not even alpha 2 which is only like 20mb ziped. WTF  ???
