tip for cheap(er) PC cables
« on: April 09, 2004, 01:15:54 pm »
I just spent some time comparison shopping for some "Cables To Go" premium low resitance USB cables for a non-mame related project.  The cables I wanted were available at 3 places, one of which was Cables To Go themselves.

By shopping around, I found them almost $10 cheaper...

all three stores have a $20 minimum

Cables To Go
$14.99 29650 1m ULTIMA USB 2.0 A-STYLE TO MINI B CABLE
$11.99 29140 1m ULTIMA USB 2.0 A/B CABLE
$ 7.80 shipping UPS ground
$ 2.95 handling fee order under $30
$37.73 total

Lastar
$11.95 29650 1m ULTIMA USB 2.0 A-STYLE TO MINI B CABLE
$10.95 29140 1m ULTIMA USB 2.0 A/B CABLE
$ 5.72 shipping UPS ground
$ 2.95 handling fee for order under $50
$31.57 total

Cables America
$10.17 29650 1m ULTIMA USB 2.0 A-STYLE TO MINI B CABLE
$10.40 29140 1m ULTIMA USB 2.0 A/B CABLE
$ 7.02 shipping UPS ground
$27.59 total

Because Cables America was so cheap on the 2 cables I was looking for, I browsed the rest of their inventory and ended up picking up some sweet rounded IDE cables that I might use in my MAME cabinet if I decide to go with an exposed motherboard (a.k.a. the sans-case nail-it-to-a-board method).

Hantarex Polo 15KHz
Sapphire Radeon HD 7750 2GB (GCN)
GroovyMAME 0.197.017h_d3d9ex
CRT Emudriver & CRT Tools 2.0 beta 13 (Crimson 16.2.1 for GCN cards)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel Core i7-4790K @ 4.8GHz
ASUS Z87M-PLUS Motherboard

I actually had GREAT luck getting cables on ebay last I looked

I got a m-m VGA extension (to cut in 1/2 for 2 arcade monitor -> vga connection.)

It was 2 bucks + 3 shipping.  Thought I did pretty good.

I've had similar good luck getting db9's and serial switchboxes on ebay.  DB9s are actually much cheaper in the cell phone sections (and I don't mind used).

I've never ordered from them, so I can't vouch for the quality of their generic cables, but here's a place with cheap cables and only a $15 minimum, IIRC (thanks OSCAR!):

What was that again?

Yesterday I went to the computer store to buy a USB extension cable. I walked out with a 4 port hub that came WITH the extension cable, and the 4 port hub was cheaper.
