Cheap Spinners or is it me?
« on: April 07, 2004, 04:46:04 pm »
I got a spinner off of ebay and it kinda sucks! Feels light and flimsy, it actually rattles when spun, and it sems to be missing info or lame encoder or something. Totally useless when you want accurate control, so remember, next time buy an Oscar spinner! Dont save money on cheap spinners folks, I have never tried Oscar spinners but I just know in my gut they must rock compared to the cheapo spinners. Who has an Oscar, my question is when you spin is it silky smooth and silent etc. heavy feeling and the like? My ebay one isnt, it even pops up and down when you spin it, total disapointment, so much so that I am wondering if spinners can capture arcade perfect Tempest arkanoid etc at all! Anyone know?

I have the Vortex spinner with Tempest replica knob and LOVE it.  I haven't touched an actual arcade spinner game in forever (So I can't vouch for authenticity), but I can't recommend it enough.  I know I looked at some of the homemade jobbers selling on Ebay and ultimately decided just to bite the bullet and buy the best.

And in answer to your question:  It's incredibly smooth, relatively silent (Though if you really spin it and put your head down you can hear the whhrrr) and has a very heavy, rugged construction.

I don't know about anyone else, but I have an Oscar Model 3 spinner on my new cabinet and I love it.  I occasionally have to tweak the sensitivity settings when playing a new game, but once that's done it works great!

Spins smoothly, its quiet and it works great on Tempest/Arknoid type games.

I have a full review of the OSCAR Vortex spinner here:
http://www.arcadeparadise.org/reviews/vortex.html

Synopsis: I love it.  It's total arcade-quality, which no one else offers.  Seriously - buy this and you'll never look back.

What kind of spinner was it?  Got a link to the auction?  If it was a used one, it may just have been worn out.

I've got a SlikStik Tornado spinner (chosen over Oscar's purely because it takes up less space under the CP), and I can whole heartedly recommend it. Everything I've played with it plays very, very well.
