PSX to PC USB adapter Super Joybox 5

Has anyone had any experience with the PSX to PC USB adapters?  I was considering making a 4-player desktop controller (with four independent, interlocking controllers that can be used seperately or all locked together) using four psx controllers and the Super Joybox 5.  Has anyone done this or similar yet? If so, how did it go?

Well all I can simply tell you is yes I have this adapter and it performs well for my needs.

There are a few potential things about it that may annoy you.

1.  When you plug it in,  the four ports may obtain different controllers IDs in windows each time you boot/plug it in.  Basically meaning you may have to rearrange the controllers to find out which is joystick 1 thru 4 (or Joystick 0 thru 3 as MAME refers to them).

You can rearrange the IDs in the Game Controllers section of the Control Panel, but this would be annoying if you are using it heaps.

Would be nice if someone knows of a nice utility to easily change the IDs of Joysticks at the OS level.  The windows method is rather tedious.

2.  In non analog mode,  pressing Digital Right for example emulates three buttons presses.  Right, POV right, and X Axis Minus.  This is true or all digital movement in digital mode.

This can give you the odd headache in some emulators when configuring controls, but there are easily work arounds to get around this (which analog on when configuring).

No drivers are required for XP/2000 or 98 which is handy.

Overall, I don't regret buying one based on my needs.  Yes,  the points above can annoy you at times (especially no 1), but for the amounts I use it, I can manage, and for the cheap price, I can't complain.

What PSX controllers do you reccomend using? Just any of them?  I am not into force feedback or anything silly like that, but I want to make sure I get the right stuff.  Should I shoot for the original PSX controllers or the ones with the little thumb joystick?

Could you just plug in one controller when you boot up (this way it will always be player 1) then plug in the #2-#4 controllers once you have booted sequentially?  I may be way off base here, being as I have never even held one of these devices and I do not know if you are able to plug in additional controllers after booting up.

Both official PSX and PS2 (Dual Shock) controllers work fine.  My preference is the PS2 ones, as it has a softer feel to the buttons and D-Pad.

I've also used it with my namco arcade stick for fighters and that works fine too.

In regards to your second question, the device is plug and play, meaning you can put the device in the PC at any time and it will be detected automatic/immediately.

Controllers can be added/removed at any time.

You can even plug in to, and get 8 joysticks for games like FIFA (emulated Genesis version).

The only catch, plug it in and windows and you see all 4 joysticks (not a bad thing).  If a controller is plugged in, it wont always be detected as Joystick 1, so you might have to move it to  one of the other PSX ports to find which port it is.

As a paranoia, I'll test this again soon to confirm, but I still pretty certain it behaves as I've described!

Oh, and I'm not sure that this adapter supports force feedback.... note, it'll support the forcefeedback joystick as a controller, it just wont vibrate in PC games that support it.

Frankly, the dual controller adapters are generally more compatible than the four way adapters. I don't plan on carrying the four way quad adapters much longer myself.
