Dual 8 way joysticks games??
« on: April 05, 2004, 04:39:05 pm »
Hello

I'm looking for a list of games that use dual 8 way games per player?

As I'm going to add dual 4/8 way joystick to my next panel.  And I just want to know if it would be best to add one 4/8 way joystick and a 4/8 way top fire joystick.  Or 2 - 4/8 way joystick per player?

Thanks for your feedback!
-GGKoul

I used the SortInfo program to make a little web page to help find out stuff like this.  You can check it out at http://jstookey.com/arcade/sortinfo/index.php .  The searches that I did below do not include clones.  Also, this list is generated from the Mame's listinfo, which is not always correct or accurate, so this list might be missing some games, and misrepresenting some others.  In general, though, it's a VERY good place to start when getting a list together.

Here's a list of Dual 8way games:
--------------------------------------
http://jstookey.com/arcade/sortinfo/index.php?num_switches=1&do_search=1&switch0=control&operator0=%3D&switchvalue0=doublejoy8way

Angel Kids (Japan) (angelkds)
Apocaljpse Now (aponow)
Bandido (bandido)
Black Widow (bwidow)
Cloak & Dagger (French) (cloakfr)
Complex X (complexx)
Crazy Climber (Japan) (cclimbrj)
Crazy Climber 2 (Japan) (cclimbr2)
Dribbling (dribling)
Front Line (frontlin)
Indoor Soccer (idsoccer)
Inferno (inferno)
Joyful Road (Japan) (joyfulr)
Krull (krull)
Libble Rabble (liblrabl)
Lost Tomb (easy) (losttomb)
Mars (mars)
Minefield (minefld)
Rescue Raider (rescraid)
Robotron (Solid Blue label) (robotron)
Rock Climber (rockclim)
Screw Loose (prototype) (screwloo)
Smash T.V. (rev 4.00) (smashtv4)
Space Dungeon (sdungeon)
Space Position (Japan) (spcpostn)
Splat! (splat)
Star Guards (stargrds)
Stompin' (stompin)
The Return of Ishtar (roishtar)
The Tin Star (tinstar)
Total Carnage (prototype, rev 1.0 01/25/92) (totcarnp)
Ultra Tank (ultratnk)
Water Match (wmatch)
Wild Western (set 1) (wwestern)

And some dual 4 way games:
----------------------------------
http://jstookey.com/arcade/sortinfo/index.php?num_switches=1&do_search=1&switch0=control&operator0=%3D&switchvalue0=doublejoy4way

Fire Trap (Japan bootleg) (firetpbl)
Karate Champ (US VS version) (kchampvs)

Is a good website, but I think it messes up on multiple control games.

I try putting in paddle or dial as one control and joystick as another, and expect to find a Tron game show up, but get nothing.

You're right.  The source of the information comes from running mame with the "--listinfo" command line switch.  The information is based on what's in the driver code.  Here is the listinfo control data for Discs of Tron:

input ( players 1 control trackball buttons 4 coins 2 tilt yes )

As you can see, this game is suffering from 2 problems - the control is called a trackball, when it should be called a dial, and also multiple control types are not listed.  Perhaps one day, the listinfo can be expanded to handle mutliple controls, and the individual drivers can be fixed to use display proper controls.

Try doing a google search of www.klov.com.  For instance, I did a search on games that have 2 players playing simultaneously with 4-way joysticks.  The search was:

"Number of Simultaneous Players: 2" "Joystick: 4-way" site:klov.com

You can do this with any of the fields on the klov website.  They used to have a search function that did this, but for some reason it went away when they redid their website.

How many of  these are Simultaneous 2-Player games?
I'm planning a 4 player panel and was trying to decide if I should curve it like the slikstik quad
or put them all straight across so that i could do simultaneous two player dual-stick games
but right now I'm still wondering how many simultaneous two player dual-stick games exist

The only one I recognize is SmashTV.  What you could do is use a frontend that supports the nplayers.ini file (www.mameworld.net/emuloader) and sort the list by number of players and bounce it against the list above.

Okay, I just tried this (but with MAME 0.87) and came up with the following:
Driblino (preliminary)
Dribbling (preliminary)
Indoor Soccer (idsoccer)
Smash TV (rev. 6.0) (and clones)
Inferno
The Return on Ishtar
Star Guards (3 P Simultaneous)
Ultra Tank
Total Carnage
Splat

FWIW

I'd add Karate Champ to the list of simultaneous dual stick games, but it uses 4 ways. It's a great game that filter missed due to the bit about 8 ways.

I know Karate Champ and Smash T.V.
Are any of those other games any good?
I'm trying to decide if it's worth altering the appearance of my CP
It's already going to be huge with the rounded front like SlikStik Quad
If I make it all straight across it might be a little ugly
