Problem With I-Pac
« on: April 03, 2004, 11:24:16 am »
This is my first post here so first things first, hello...that didn't sound as lame in my head.

Anyway, I started my arcade project a few months back and about a week ago I got to putting it all together. It was all going well untiel I got to wiring in the controls. I have wired all buttons to the I-Pac2 and hooked up the I-Pac2 to my PC by the USB cable. The problem I am having is that my computer, which is running on Windows 2000, knows I-Pac2 is there but can not install it. It detects it through the USB cable but when I try to install it a window comes up saying,

"An error occured during the installation of the device

The installation failed because the function device was not specified for this device instance"

To me that doesn't even seem like it's in English.

To try and solve this so far I have tryed reinstalling the I-Pac2 over and over again, reinstall the USB drivers and change the I-Pac board to Alt and USB settings. Even after that I still can not get it to work.

I've tryed emailing Ultimarc but have not ot a reply and I can't find the answer to my problem on their site either so I would be thankfull to any help from anyone here.

Thanks for the time.

See if this thread helps:

Or if not, you might try posting in the other (Ultimarc, above) forum.

Unless of course someone else on here has any ideas?

I did reply by email.
I assume you are trying to install WinIPAC, which is the programming utility (not necessary for getting the board to work).
The error is probably because you don't have Direct-X 8.1 or later installed. This is needed for the WinIPAC IPD program to work. It's mentioned in the install instructions.

I did reply by email.

Sorry about that but when I posted the message you hadn't. Anyway, I'll say what I said to you here to incase anyone has any ideas. It's not the programme that I can't get to install it is the actual hardware. I've set it to USB and currently have it set on Mame and connected to my PC by the USB. The computer knows that it is there but it won't install it so it can not regonise it.

Do _ANY_ USB devices work?

If not, do you have the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard installed?

If not, what motherboard do you have?

Maybe I can point you in the right direction.

All other USB devices I run from it work fine. So I'm sure it's nothing to do with that, thanks anyway.

How old is the IPAC and what USB devices are you running i.e. 2.0 or 1.1's.   I had this same problem when I was running 2.0 usb devices.  I run XP and I went into the BIOs and disabled the LEGACY USB.  And now my runs perfect.  Just a thought maybe you could take a look at that.

I had the same problem with my IPAC2 but when I switched from USB to PS/2 connection everything worked fine, give it a try.

The one thing that has been overlooked so far is the fact that you're running Win2k. Do you have all of the updates installed? I was having problems with some USB devices until I installed SP1 for Win 2k. Try getting all the updates and see if it helps your problem.

Thanks for the help but I've got it fixed now. The problem was that I had wired in all the controls before installing it. Not sure why that effects the installation though.

Anyway, it works now and the cabinet is running but only for a few days then I'm going to do some more work on it.

Thanks again for the help.
