Has anyone mamed just a single game?
« on: April 02, 2004, 02:06:37 pm »
Has anyone done this?  I was playing Boomr' Ranger on my Boomr' Ranger mame machine last night and it looked better than when the original board was in it.  I've though about this before with my sprint2 and Kickman machines since mobo/chip combos are pretty cheap at Fryes.  It would seem cheaper in the long run than trying to buy a replacement board off ebay for $50 - $100+ you dont know works or not.

Problem with Sprint 2 is that it is a B&W display, so it won't look as good on a color monitor, second problem with it is that it has a 23" display, and has a graphical bezel that matches up to it. Go ahead and TRY to find another display that will match up to that bezel.

You can get your Sprint 2 boardset repaired by Elektron Forge (might be "Electron Forge") for about $100.

I am also the owner of a wonky Sprint 2, so I feel your pain.

Kickman however would be a much easier one to do.

Hey paigeoliver,  I've been reading about your exploits over the months about your "wonky"sprnt2. I know  how frustrating it is to have something you love so much, not do what you want it to (kinda like kids?).  I almost thought it was yours I got at the last St. Louis auction  ;D  I just checked the mine out and haven't really noticed it but the bezel does  "frame" the tube perfectly.  BTW the game I got shows nothing but garbage when its on.  the board has a chip that has been solderd more than once ( including my feeble attempt to fix it)

The chip with the heatsink on it, right?

I did this when I with my robotron cabinet. I just couldn't wait and decided to throw in an old p2 300 just so I could play it. It's complete not save the the coin mechs, but still it might be worth it in the long run depending on the game.

I've concidered doing that with my sit down Spy Hunter. If MAME would drive the weapons lights I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Hmm, I thought I remember reading something about being able to do this using the keyboard lights (num/cap/scroll) and an IPAC.  I was hoping to utilize that for my spy hunter yoke and volcano buttons.

They've actually gone a step further; and done it in a manner that will fit on a bootable floppy.
See the AMOAD (Arcade Machine On A Disk) Project for details.

Now that is cool 8) I'll have to dust off one of the old floppy drives laying around and try this.  Thanks for that link

That'd work for the yoke and a couple of volcanoes, but to do Spy Hunter right you'd need the weapons van button light and the four weapons lights in the bezel. I've found a suitable hardware gadget to serve as the light driver board, it connects to the parallel port and controls up to 8 circuits. What I'd need is a bit of software to interface between it and the SH MAME driver.
