Which side of cabinet to mount jamma board?
« on: April 02, 2004, 01:22:30 pm »
In a typical jamma cabinet, which side is the board usually mounted on?

When you respond, make sure that you indicate whether you're looking a the front of the cabinet or the back.

thanks

On my Jamma cabinets (KOAMs) the PCB is mounted on the left hand side of the cabinet (if you are looking at it from the front).

Hope this helps,

There is no "standard" side.  I have seen them mounted left, right, on a shelf in the middle, on the underside of the monitor shelf, and (once) in the marquee area.

If you are right handed, then mount it on the left hand side, if you are left handed then mount it on the right hand side. That makes it easier to change the board, or otherwise reach in and mess with it.

Which way is the Jamma connector usually oriented?  Top, bottom, side?

this is a silly thread..

it's as silly as asking how you like to sleep at night.. left, right, stomach on your back..

point is.. they're all good.  Electronics are not gravity sensitive!

I like to sleep on my stomach  ;D

I also mount my JAMMA boards vertically with the key down (but sometimes horizonatlly  ;D  if I have space issues)

This thread is not silly.

I can think of several valid reasons why things might be mounted one way versus another:

Mounting on the left side of the cabinet (looking at the front) might be better for running the wiring to the coin door as they are always (?) hinged on the left side.

Mounting on the right side of the cabinet (looking at the front)  might be better because the power switch is usually on the right.

Mounting with the jamma connector oriented UP might make for a more reliable cabinet as the weight of the wire can't pull the connector off the board as it might if you mounted it with the connector oriented DOWN.

Obviously, it doesn't make any difference electrically as long as everything is connected.  However, certain mounting choices may make for neater more efficient wiring, easier maintenance, or more reliable connections.

There are people here who have been working on cabinets for a long time and have seen what manufacturers have done wrong/right in the past, I'm just hoping to benefit from some of their experience.

If possible, the JAMMA connector on the board should be mounted so it's pointing up. Connector will stay cool and less chance of it sliding off by itself.

I agree with JoeB ... this is pointless :D

I've never seen a JAMMA connector just slide off ... and I've never seen one that needed to be cooled.  Why would it be getting hot???

... I've always found a good JAMMA connector difficult to slide on and off (maybe you need to replace your harness if its sliding off especially when the cabinet is a stationary 99% of the time ... lmao).

About the only thing I ran into mounting wise that seems to be critical (in some cases) are the hard drive based JAMMA boards .... mounting the HD horizontal instead of vertical.

Certain hard drive manufacturers require them to be mounted a certain way and other manufacturers it just doesn't matter.

For example .... remember Compaq mounting some of there HDs upside down in some of their systems and them failing after a year ... lol
