Question about trackball
« on: March 31, 2004, 04:18:12 pm »
I'm building a computer that I will use exclusivelly for MAME32 under win2000. As a pointing device I'd like to have a trackball so as to save space and becasue I could use it for MAME game also. I'm looking for a model like those at the arcades (with a big ball). A few days ago I tried one (a brand called chic). It's a cheap PC trackball with big ball. I found the movement of the cursor not very smooth so I didn't buy the trackball. Is there any other manufacturer with trackballs that perform more resolution (the one I tried had 300 dpi). I could by a Logitech optical trackball, which may perform perfectly, but the ball is so small... I've also thought about Ultimarc's trackball, but do you know if it can be used as a normal pc mouse? And does it offer enough resolution?

Any "Mame" trackball can be used as a Windows pointing device just fine. I personally own a 3" Betson Imperial PS/2 trackball with the groovygamegear.com upgrade kit and it performs wonderfully. I also own a Happ controls 2.25" trackball with Happs serial interface board and it also works like a charm.

Those logitech trackballs with the smaller ball and one button on each side (often called the "Marble Mouse"), are top notch as windows pointing devices, I have been using them for like 6 years now. Not really the best Mame trackball though, it is too light.

PO

How much of a difference did the upgrade kit from Groovy Game Gear make on your Betson?

I'm contemplating the kit and would appreciate your opinion.

Thanks,

Buy it. It is worth it. I liked the trackball fine before, but it is so much better now. It is also a very easy install.
