new cab wobble
« on: March 28, 2004, 04:14:41 am »
just built the base of my new(and first) cab, see this post

http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=10;action=display;threadid=17593

i've noticed it has a very slight sideways wobble, any ideas of how i could brace it? there is no front on the base as it was going to be hinged to open for access although i may need to rethink this.

any constructive help/comments would be great.

many thanks

nik

I'd drill the base for leveling feet.

thanks for the reply tailgunner,

i don't think i made myself too clear, the structure has a slight wobble. the base is perfectly level and has no need for leveling feet.

Diagonal braces on the inside along the back and sides will probably solve the problem and allow you to keep the front clear for access.

That's a horse of a different color. ;)

What I'd do in that case is frame the front opening with MDF, and make your door fit inside the frame. This would give your cab tortional stability so it doesn't wobble, and still give you plenty of access to the inside. I've modified your picture to illustrate. Red is the frame, the door would fill the remaining opening.

yes, I think tail-gunner nailed the problem...

it seems like your front is completely "hollow" with no support.... (other than the control panel part...)

what I would do is cut a piece to fit into the front....
(like tailgunner suggested... but no need to cut the hole yet..) and just duck-tape it to the front temporary and then try it again....

are you going to have a coin door ??... if so....
or maybe what you can do is...
that front piece is a door itself....
since 1 side has the hinge....
and the other side... use some kind of clamp or lock so that the front door can be secured and add support to the whole cab...

then you can open the coin door to "unclamp" and open the whole front door....

I hope you understand what I mean...  ;) ;D

thanks for the helpful replies,

tailgunner kinda summarised what i was thinking about doing, great minds thinking alike, ;) eh?

nope won't be having a coin door so a hinged panel with some kind of lock will do it.

Nightmare03 - i will be releasing the plans but not untill i've finished the cab. there has been huge changes to my original plans during construction. last think i want is to give out incorrect info (plus the plans are probably unusable to anyone other than me at the moment, my sketches and scribbles are a bit rough to say the least). i'm glad you like the design.

i'll post updates in the "project announcement" forum untill the cab is complete then i'll start on my website.

Even if the cab is level, you should put some feet on it.  Those leveling feet keep the base from getting chiped up from moving it around.  You could put on some furniture / chair rubber feet that will pick up any problem you may have a floor.

You may love your cab now, but it will be dead weight to you a year or so from now.  Those feet keep you from slamming it down on the MDF.

Hey, I built almost that exact same cabinet once. I did it without plans though. I just started cutting and building, and then the carpenter roommate I used to have came home and called me a moron, and changed a couple of things on it, until it ended up looking very close to yours.
