Screws for joysticks and IPAC mounting...
« on: March 25, 2004, 10:36:01 pm »
OK, I am (--this--) close to being done with my cabinet, 4 months in the making on and off :)  I am at a little problem though.  I am not a handy person, so I can't just "eye" something and get it right the first time, so I figured I would ask for help.

Anyways, I purchased two Happ Competition Joysticks, but the instructions do not say what screws to use for mounting... nor does the website.  It looks like the holes are 6mm in width, and with my 3/4 MDF I would want maybe 1 1/4" length screws to bolt them down.  Any suggestions on that?

Also, I plan on mounting my IPAC with a piece of bubblewrap seperating it from the wood.  What size screws do you guys suggest for mounting the IPAC?

I can't say I'd suggest using bubble wrap behind your I-PAC.  If you think about it, you'd be putting downward pressure on the sides of the chip and upward pressure on the center if you did it that way.  You should get yourself some PCB mounting feet.  But if you don't want to spend the extra $2 you can easily make some out of things you probably have lying arround the house, I meen all they are is a non-conductive piece of material with a hole in it.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

I found a bunch of short (about 1/4 inch) plastic tubes in an old erector set. These things work great for mounting PCBs. Also someone on here took a dremel to a ball point pen casing and cut it up into pieces to use in mounting PCBs.

You can also use a Bic pen and cut it into equal lengths for mounting feet.

I used #10 x 1" screws to mount my Comps, but that was into solid wood.
The "approved" method for mounting to MDF is to use carriage bolts all the way through the MDF, with nuts on the bottom.
I think screws will work; I'm just not sure if they would work loose over time in the MDF.

Also, I mounted my I-pac in a project box, so that I could use cable restrictors on the wiring. That prevents the wires from pulling directly on the I-pac connections if something snags one of them.
I haven't ever actually snagged a wire; but it's there for protection if I do.

When I upgraded my panel from the Crayola 3" trackball to a Betson 3" trackball, I had to do something about the oversize hole from the Crayola ball until I get around to making a new top for the CP.

I used some aluminum screw posts from Ace Hardware instead of carriage bolts.  They are even lower profile than a carriage bold and the heads are smooth.  This is what they look like.
