Good Quality S-Video Cable
« on: March 24, 2004, 10:01:55 pm »
Today I bought a high quality s-video cable at Big Lots for $4.00 and it has made a dramatic difference in the video quality. Before there was some kind of diagonal line thing going on but not with this cable. Although it is not a monster brand cable it looks like on with large cable and gold ends. I know this has been cover in other threads, but I was made a believer today. It looks almost as good as RGB.

Tell you what, i found some gold cables at radio shack that were a really good price!!!  All kinds of cables,s-vhs, rca etc...  I about yanked the guy trying to sell my sister a cable set for her dish to go into her hd-tv, over the counter the other day.  He was trying to tell my sister to buy the cable set that says it was made for HD-TV and dishes and basically it had a RED BLUE GREEN coloring to match the tv's and it was like $40.00!  I told my sister to just buy 3 single video cables that were only like 7.00 a piece and just make sure she matched up the colors right and the guy got all pissy with me, saying "no sir, the RGB cable is made for the hd-tv's!"  I looked at him and then showed him the ends of both types of connectors and said "see! they are all the same on the ends jackass! Its just packed different so that people who are too stupid to know better buy the 40.00 one instead!"  Then i looked at my sister and said buy the 3 separate ones and i will take you home and show you how to set them up!"   Long story short, it all worked just fine, like i said it would. :) My sister couldn't beleive that that guy was trying to get her to buy the more expensive cabling.
I don't think alot of people realise that you don't need to buy the more expensive RGB cables.  Its all composite connections and it doesn't matter what the damn label says, it will work for whatever you need it to work for lol.

Anyways.....lol.  sorry for digressing hehe.

WTF?  I know little about this because I don't own any RGB input devices, but that doesn't make much sense to me...

In a nutshell,  usually you buy RCA or COMPOSIT type connectors that plug into your vcr or other units. These composit connections usually have the colors yellow (for video) and then red and white for left and right audio.   Normally you can find a bundled pack of composit type connections in a bundled pack of wires that are color coded RED BLUE GREEN, the basic 3 colors that PROJECTION tv's use and it makes a really sharp picture.  Well, my point was that when you buy the RGB cable its usually ALOT more money.  The reality is that all of the cables use the same type of connection. That being composit!  By "labeling" it RGB cables and saying" this is made for a projection tv" they mark up the price ALOT and fool people into thinking that its some kind of special cable they need, when in fact the can buy the cheaper cables that are labled to be used on VCR's and it will work just fine!  Bottom line.....ITS ALL THE SAME CABLE.  clear now? lol If not, go do some research into the RGB connectors etc and you can learn more about all that. lol

well.... its not all wrong... but I don't think you're completely right either...

different cable does make a difference... because cable itself also hold resistance... "the load".. I believe its called impedence.... especially for a long wire... it does make a difference...

I mean... if you're trying to make a perfect system...
you don't want to cheap out on cables...

yes, if the plug type is the same.. then you can basically use the same RCA wires and plugs it on to composite connections... you will still see the pictures... but will it be clearer if you use a good cable ??...... I have not tried it myself.... (my tv doesn't have composite...  :-\  )

(another thing is a regulated power supply.... makes a world of difference....)

for example... like speaker wires... if you really use the good stuff... like monster cable.... or something that is soooo freaking expensive that you empty your bank account and that thing is not long enough to hang yourself... it does make a difference...
(I know... because I tried.... my friend is a Hi Fi crazy people... and we hooked up different cables.. and I can actually hear the difference... and I'm no expert...)

so... I would say.... not all expensive cables are ripoffs...

Another Brilliant mind ruined by education....  :p

Let me be more clear lol.   Better connectors like gold plating and such WILL give you better clearity. I wasn't really addressing that aspect and of course, the better the metal type, the more money your going to pay.  In the case of my sisters, the metal types were identical , so the price differences were not jusitified to me.   :)
