Well, I'm just about done my UAII. Frosty did the artwork for me, and it turned out better than I could have planned. Check it out.

That looks awesome! Where'd you get the printing done, and how did you apply it?

Thanks! I got the printing done at www.mamemarquees.com. It's a self adheisive vinyl sticker. Pretty easy to put on. These were the only guys I could find that could print something big enough to cover the entire UAII sides. They did a really great job though, and were quite fast.

So stupid question No. 1: How do you get the graphic size exactly to your arcade? Do they print a little extra bleed and then you trim it to fit perfectly?

Thanks for all the compliments...

As for how to get the artwork to fit exactly - Frosty can probably comment in more detail - but basically you just design the graphic so that there's about an extra inch on each side. That gives you some room to position it, and makes trimming it pretty easy. Once the entire thing is secure, you just use an exacto knife and trim off the excess. I put the graphics on before the t-molding, which made the trimming easier, and gave it a nice finished look.

I also have a great marquee for it with Bart in there... I'll post more pics once its on - hopefully soon.

WOW! That's wicked awesome!

That would lookk great from a mile away...

Looks like the "M" in "Mamestation" got cut off on the McBain side. But is still rocks.

Great job! Kudos to Frosty...

Thanks guys.

The "M" in the "Mamestation" is only cut off because of the angle of the picture... it's on there....The control panel is just blocking it.

Stupid questions:

1 - Is the artwork "all" vector?

2 - How easy it is to apply the adhesive paper? Is it risky in case of any mistakes?!

3 - How much $$ did you spent!?

Comments: Frekkin' awesome dude! I think all the people here should have one print like that in the cab! :)

Have you consider donating the sideart to the community!?  :)

Re:Springfield Mame Station

Thanks Fiend.

1 - Yup.. all vector

2 - Pretty straight forward. I applied it in thirds. Once it was in position, I put something heavy on it in the middle so it couldn't move. Then I pealed off 1/3 of the back, cut it, and laid the sticker down carefully. Then I took the weight off and did the middle third, followed by the last third. It's definately a 2 person job, but pretty straight forward. Used a credit card to smooth out the bubbles, and an exacto knife to trim.

3 - I got it at Mamemarquees.com. He originally quoted me $210 for the pair, but gave me a deal on it later. See this thread in the artwork section :

http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=13;action=display;threadid=15786;start=msg124557#msg124557

These are really big posters. He says the $210 price will come down now that he knows how big they are, but I had already had the artwork done, and this was the only place that could print them so big. You can also see the pictures before they went on the cabinet there.

As for donating them, we need Frosty's approval first..... I am no computer artist, and he vectorized them for me.

Looks great!

I'm curious as to how well the printing holds up on the vinyl. Does it resist scratching or does the print come off easily?

thanks

Thanks for all the compliments.

Yeah... it's pretty easy to scratch the art work right down the vinyl. A sharp finger nail will do it. I've considered covering it with Lexan to protect it... I will probably try to angle it in the corner so there's no easy way to touch the sides, and just hope for the best. If this were on a control panel, you would absolutely have to cover it.

I suggest you DO cover it with lexan like how I did.Use very very small black screws. Its better then have the piece scrathed or something later on.

Again,very nicely done :)

You could have had it laminated before applying it to the cabinet.  Many printshops and signshops can laminate something that large.  It usually costs around $4/sqft though  :-\.  That cabinet looks great.  I really like the rounded control panel.
Next I'll be on fries, and that's when the big money starts rolling in.

Hey guys,

Thanks again for all the compliments. Seems like I'm not the only Simpsons fan out there..... :)

I put the marquee on last night as well as the monitor bezel. I'll post pics tonight. It really finished it off and makes it look even better. The only thing left now is the coin door, which I'm still waiting for. In the mean time I'm going to make some little Simpsons pictures for the coin return buttons.... :)

You guys are way nice.   ;D  Thanks a lot to everyone who likes the artwork, the King was great to work with - hey who _isn't_ a Simpsons fan?  I just loved the theme, and the sidearts turned out super great didn't they?  This is a great example that home-built stuff can turn out looking (both construction and artwork) more 'professional' than store bought stuff.

To answer some of the earlier questions -

-It's actually mostly vector, I did put the final layouts into photoshop to add some little effects and for easier editing.  Mostly the lettering and glows for mcbain.

-I always design my stuff with some extra room on the edges, for easy trimming.  An inch for big stuff (sideart) and .25-.5 in for marquees/overlays.  This way you don't have to be ultra-exact with trimming, and there's a little margin for error and irregular sized (i.e., not perfectly square corners) panels.

-I vectorized bart, the evil bullies, mcbain, and homer.  If the King is cool with uploading the AI files to the library I don't mind.

Hope that helps.

Thanks again, hope everyone has a good weekend!

I actually have been printing my own art on adhesive vinyl. It works well, but does scratch. I found a WONDERFUL solution!

Find an art store, and look for the painting section. There you can find Matte or Gloss varnish. I am using gloss varnish on my joust  CPO, it looks great! It is basically like a spray on laminate. I wish I could find the stuff in bulk on the web.

I'd have Homer on one side and Bart on the other or Bart on one side and Lisa on the other.

Thanks for the compliment.  I usually don't discuss fees publicly, though, just to avoid any potential (and probably inevitable) arguments about 'charging' people for stuff.

What program do you use to create your artwork?
Are you a windows or mac user?
I think I remember seeing vector based artwork somewhere, so I guess you are using Illustrator or something like that.
How can you top the Simpsons artwork?
Also, do you draw on paper and scan or use a graphics tablet to do the artwork?

WoW!!! That looks Great!!!  Frosty, Excellent Work!!

I too used MameMarquees as they can print overside artwork.  I got my 48x19 control panel artwork printed from them.  I should get it some time this week.

Just wondering if Frosty or "King" is going to post these images to the library?  That would be EXCELLENT <Mr Burns voice> if these and any other Simpsons artwork could be added to the library.

WOW.  Best looking Mame machine I've ever seen, without question.

Did the artwork ever get posted up anywhere?  I saw that it was mentioned up above, but that was 2 weeks ago.

Thanks

it seems to me that it wouldn't be fair to King_Rancher to have the artwork posted....if he had to pay Frosty to make it...shouldn't everyone have to pay Frosty for it?

Otherwise we can all have totally sweet Simpsons cabs and King_Rancher's won't be the only totally sweet one out there.

Or am I wrong on this?

Yeah but frosty doesn't OWN the picture.Just cuz he vectorized it doesnt give him the right to call it his own(pretty sure people are aware of that).I don't see why not share the vector file.Whats the big deal ???

Its all about sharing with the comunity ! :)
(not that I care about simpsons, just my 7 cents)

I just don't see why it should be public.  If I paid someone to design something (or just do some work) for me, and they did it and then they started giving it away to everyone else, I'd be ticked that I had to pay for it.

If the person who bought it wishes to share with everyone and the person who charged for the work to be done is okay with that, then great!  but if he doesn't want to share, I can't say i blame him.

Especially having seen everyone say how much they'd like to have one and they're all jealous.  As soon as they have one you're not the coolest guy on the block anymore.

btw, if anyone wants a good .psd copy of my monitor bezel, I'd be happy to share.  ;)

I'm all about sharing and helping others out, but giving away something that makes me unique that I paid good $$ for....just doesn't seem that wonderful to me.

Anyway, it's beautiful and I would like to have one, but It's just as cool to show it co-workers and say "look at the work these guys did....fantastic"  :)

Wow...

Been awhile since I checked this post... and there's a lot of comments on here..

Regarding GHowards comment on the speakers sitting on the top - I just placed them up there for the pictures, they're not mounted there. They do kinda look like ears..  ;) Eventually I want to make some stands for them to sit beside the cabinet. When I have time... probably when the spring / summer is over and I crawl back in doors....

As for sharing the art work, it seems like there's a lot of interest in it. It doesn't bother me a whole lot to share, especially when I consider how much I have taken from this community for free. Not being a computer genius, I look at the entire MAME development effort as absolutely amazing, and it doesn't cost me a cent.

It seems pretty weird to me that someone would take the artwork and just use it outright anyway. The people on this forum are either doing authentic restorations / imitations of cabinets, or doing their own very creative things (by the way Stingray... love the mini theme). Copying my cabinet exactly doesn't seem like something the people in this forum would do. All of the Simpsons pictures in the artwork were ones I just found on the internet anyway. I just passed them along to Frosty to work his magic on.

With that said I'd like to think that if I did share it, and someone one did something cool with it, they'd share it back with me.

So if you want it, just pm me and we can set something up.

Thanks again for all the compliments.

I'm sure people just want access to the files so they can tweak it in thier own images. I also had work done by frosty, using some of my own hand drawn artwork, it's kinda corny but works for what I wanted, and if anyone wanted to use it I would consider it a compliment. Although it is really cool that your willing to share your images and THAT is one AWESOME cab!

Yeah... it's pretty easy to scratch the art work right down the vinyl. A sharp finger nail will do it. I've considered covering it with Lexan to protect it...
Quote

There is another alternative but it may be a bit pricey. They make a clear vinly material which is similar to the material you had printed. It applies the same way and comes in different sized rolls. I believe this company is selling something similar to what I have used in the past:

http://www.signstop-supply.com/digital/g_index.htm

If not there are many other sign supply companies that sell material like that. I think this might do you better than lexan just bcause you can trim it like you did with the other vinyl. It is also so thin that you really won't even notice it on there. I am not sure however if you could remove it without pulling the ink off from your material. (Not that you'd ever really have the need to but I'd be careful when you applied it to make sure it is exactly where you want it.

The material they sell on that site is 54" wide and comes in 150' rolls. The width is such that you may even be able to do each side in one piece. That would be extra nice.

Search around though, some companies will sell that stuff in 10yd rolls and it would be much cheaper. Probably just about what you'd need too.  I found that link by searching for "sign supplies" and "clear vinyl"

I would give you the company name I got mine from but they don't sell it any more.

Hope this helps,

Excellent Cab BTW, really beautiful.

Steve

This is amazing.  I am totally rethinking the artwork for my cab now - I didn't realize that anything can be used as sideart with a little effort (and $$$).  Very nice.

ok i know this has been discussed before on here and my search has come up empty as I cant recall the name of the stuff. But folks, awhile back some folks used some thick clear gel-type stuff like a urethane almost; to cover bartops. Now i know they use it in restaurants on tabletops that have the "ads" on them. Just curious if you have thought of this option to seal the art and sides of the cab for protection. This stuff dries rock hard and clear and makes a very thick tough surface thats easy to clean. Someone please advise as to what the stuff is called. I know I saw it at Menards, just cant recall the name. Just trying to give King_Rancher another option here. Excellent cabinet by the way. And frosty, great art as usual dude!

I think you might be thinking of acrylic. Comes like epoxy: 2 parts, mix em together the pour it out and i hardens in like an hour.

NIVO, that's an epoxy finish you're speaking of.  this Here is a link to what you mean, but that stuff isn't the best solution.  It's meant for horizontal surfaces (although it CAN work vertically, with some thinking), needs a form (kinda like pouring forms for concrete), and needs to cure before it can be worked (drilling holes for screws, cutting, etc).

That stuff is SUPER cool for the right project!
