P2 button 5 & 6 not working
« on: March 21, 2004, 12:58:43 pm »
I can't seem to get player 2's buttons 5 & 6 working on my machine.  When I play any of the CAPCOM fighters as the second player, buttons 5 & 6 are dead.

At first, I thought that the problem was my J-PAC or my wiring but if I open notepad in windows and hit each of player 2's buttons in order, it types:

asqwik

So the problem isn't in my wiring or the J-PAC.

Any ideas where I should look next?  This is frustrating.

Have you tried setting them up in mame?
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

I was having this "problem" before too and it so pissed me off, and I nearly made another hole in the wall (with my head) when I found out the "problem"/solution.  You just need to configure the two buttons  in MAME.  For some reason, by default (or whatever) those 2 buttons are not assigned automatically (anymore?).

Out of the box, MAME is configured for Player 1 buttons 1-10 and Player 2 buttons 1-4, anything beyond this, you have to set up yourself.

Thanks all.  Got it working now.

I made an (incorrect) assumption because my J-PAC had "MAME default" settings that included 6 buttons for player 2.

The J-PAC does have default setting for these buttons. The problem is that MAME does'nt. Why, I know not. This is probably the number one support question for I-PAC / J-PAC.
I think I'll try to lean on the MAME devs to add these keys into the default setup. It would be really good if they were to use the keycodes I chose for the I-PAC defaults...would save a lot of support emails.

Actually, I thought there might be a problem because the I-PAC defaults for P2 Buttons 5 thru 8 are the MAME defaults for P3 joystick movement, but since there are no 3 player or 4-player simultaneous arcade games with more than 4 buttons, this actually doesn't cause any problems.
