J-Stick Mounting
« on: March 19, 2004, 07:33:19 pm »
Hey gang,
Just got my J-Stick from Andy, they seem pretty sweet. Only thing is I didn't realize how short they are. I'm mounting in 3/4 wood. Seems like even with a cavity routed these are going to be pretty short.

Anyone do this with any success? Suppose I could top mount..

ball-top or bat-top?  Actually it doesn't matter, after I'd done my math you'll probably want to top mount either style (see below).

With the bat-top you would probably be ok if you routed out 1/2" from the bottom of the panel but with 3/4" wood and 1/8" of lexan/plexi you'd only have 1/4" of wood left and 3/8" of material including the lexan/plexi.  You'd only have 1/8" of wood if you routed out 1/8" for the dust cover on the top side of the wood so you'd have to put the dust cover on top of the lexan/plexi.  If I were to do this I'd mount the bat-top from the top of the panel (same as the ball-top procedure below) and just deal with the extra joystick height.

For the ball-top you'd want to top mount.  Route out enough from the top of the panel for the mounting plate height and dust cover height (probably 3/16").  Mount the stick using flat topped wood screws.  Put the dust cover under the lexan/plexi for a nice clean look.

I mounted some recently to a (non routed) panel of 15mm MDF.  I guess it depends on preference but for some games (shooters) I found they work fine, for others (fighters) they feel too short.

For my final panel I think I will route the underside down to 5mm or so.

They bat style t-sticks are actually almost the exact same height as the happs comps.  They are maybe 1/16"-1/32" shorter.  Being that I had a comp mounted and routed about 1/4" in a cp  and I liked the height of it I just fine.  So I did the same for my t-stiks and maybe took another 1/16" to bring them up a little higher I haven't installed them yet but I would imagine they should be fine and should be the same exact height as my comp and the same height as a super thats moutned on 3/4"

The bat style T-stick is 88mm from mounting plate to top of handle, nearly the same as a Happs super (87mm).  The bat style J-stick is 78mm from mounting plate to top of handle.  The Happs competition has a height of 93mm.  So the bat style J-stick is roughtly a half inch shorter than the competition and about 5/16 inch shorter than the super.  The ball top J-sticks are 5/16 inch shorter than the bat style J-stick (69mm).

Crap sorry I thought I saw T-stik and I didn't even realize that the j-stik was short sorry.  Yeah top mount that puppy then most jap games are made with metal cps so unless you have a metal cp you want to use then top mount it.

Also the happs webpage lies about the height of the comp its acutally shorter than the super but I'm not sure by how much I think about 1/4"
