Which key accesses AMD K6 bios?
« on: March 19, 2004, 03:00:52 pm »
Anyone know how to access bios on the k6-300.  I have had no luck with delete, f2, or f10.  Is there another key I should try on startup?  Is there a combo I can hit once in windows?  Thanks in advance.

Depends on the motherboard brand (BIOS is a motherboard function) Usually there is a screen that say "Press <some key> to enter setup" when the PC first starts up.

Most common for me is the DEL key to enter the setup.

What is the brand of the motherboard?... that would help us answer your question.

If I'm looking in the right place, I can't find any manufacturer's names on the board.  One chip says SIS.  Another is labeled ISSI.  The biggest one is covered up by a small fan.

I was hoping there was a 'special' AMD way to access bios that I didn't know about.  The help menu was as usual no help.

It's not a brand-name computer, is it?  Like a Dell or HP or sth?  If not, SIS is the chipset, there should usually be a manufactuer's name on the center of the fan on the biggest chipset.  Otherwise, look for silk-screened names and numbers probably near the sides of the board.

Is this a homemade machine, or is it made by a manufacturer like Dell, HP, or Gateway?

Also... does the post screen tell you anything like bios revsion number or manufacturer?

This is in a HP.  This computer starts up so fast, it might say which key to push, but it goes by in a blur.

Try these:

Enter the BIOS: Press F1 repeatedly during the HP boot-up screen for setup.

F1 is supposed to be the key to get you into bios setup on most HP's

or

Enter the BIOS: Press F2 repeatedly during the HP boot-up screen for setup.

When the HP screen is up, you can usually hit [TAB] to see what's going on in the background.

It worked (the f1 or f2).  I was able to access the bios.  Thanks for the tips.
Once in the bios, I was unable to set the power config to boot up at power restore, as I have done with other computers in other cabinets.  Are there any other ways to do this?

That's the problem and the solution with the ATX spec.

I'm wondering if perhaps shorting the green to a ground wire permenantly would work.

That would do the trick however, the computer would always be on unless you cut the power to the powersupply.  There would be no way the computer could power itself off.

And the problem with that would be....?  Kill the power @ the source, with a switch on the top of the cab.

Not a problem at all... I'm just discussing all the possible consequences.

besides,  where I live the power doesn't go out unless we are having a helluva storm... in that case I don't want my 'puter trying to start when the power is coming and going.

Hence the flip-switch @ the souce.  More like a real arcade cabinet that way.

So if I did the green wire thing, I would flip the switch (on the cabinet) to start my computer up.  When I want to shut down, I select shut down from the menu, then hit the switch killing the electric?

Where would one find this infamous green wire that needs to be shorted to a ground?

On the power supply, leading from it to your motherboard.

Would you do this to YOUR computer as a last resort, or use another method?  If I do this wrong, could it make all the smoke leak out of the chips?

If you do it wrong, yes, you could mess something up - what kind of computer is it?  (Specific model).  I would look carefully in the BIOS for the setting you are asking about.

It's an HP Pavilion 6330 with AMD K6-300mhz.  I looked carefully in the BIOS and could find nothing about powering up.
