Monitor? Arcade monitor or TV?
« on: March 17, 2004, 05:05:36 pm »
Guys the new cabinet I am building I am not sure what to use.. Currently I use a pc monitor. I am thinking of adding console support as well to the new one. I considered using arcade monitor but I dont know how well it is with Xbox, PS2 and dreamcast.or if it works.. I know PC can work but i recall with DC not all games would work through the DC to PC adapter they had to be compatible. I think tv would obviously work for the console games, BUT how does it look for mame and pc emulators? the resolution is not all that good correct?

Thanks in advance
Jim

I would definitely vote tv in this case.  The consoles will easily hook up to a tv and so will a pc with a tv-out video card.  As far as resolution,  a tv (using s-video input) looks MUCH more like the real game than a pc monitor does.  Of course vector games don't look as nice but those need vector monitor or a pc monitor to look nice.

I'm a real nut for vector games, and as such I'm glad I chose a PC monitor for my cab. It's not "arcade perfect" but the vector games look much better than they would on a TV.

I'm thoroughly pleased with my Toshiba TV I put in there...

And it really DOES matter the quality of the TV.  I had a cheap ass Sansui or something in there at first and it was absolutely wretched.  When I spent a few dollars more for the Toshiba after taking back the Sansui, it was perfect at 27".

I would say... bigger is better.. hee hee.... (if your budget allows...) should look for 1 that has s-video input....

and if you're using it for your computer (mame)...

it'll be good if it turns off in the s-video mode... it'll turn back on in the s-video mode... (some cheap ones will go back to a channel...)

well... also.... although bigger is better... I think it'll be best if it'll fit inside your cab.... heee hee...  ;D :P

I'd say the number one option you need for a TV is auto-on after power off.

SO, if you cut the power to the TV, it will turn back on after the power comes on.

Otherwise, you will have to rig something up to turn it on when you turn everything else on.

All the stuff about auto-power-on and coming back to a particular channel is good advice, but when it comes to quality I've found my El Cheapo Apex 27 inch works great.  The video quality is just fine on all my games -- I even play vector games and don't have any serious problems.  Yes, a real arcade monitor or a PC monitor would be even better, but at this size I'd pay a heckuva lot of more money.  95% of what I run on the TV looks fantastic.

The price is right -- I got mine on Black Friday for $130.  I think they list for around $150, and you can often find them on sale for less.  Best quality TV?  No way.  Good enough for most MAME?  You bet.
