Repainting vinyl sideart? Need Help
« on: March 16, 2004, 09:58:56 pm »
I bought some acrylic paint to try to touch up my Xmen cab's sideart which has some pretty good wear and tear on it from wherever it was in its life before me.  However, it's not working out as well as I had hoped.  Color matching isnt too bad, but you can just tell where I'm touching it up. It looks like a touched up section, if you know what I mean.  The paint also isnt covering up any cuts or gashes, so I'll prolly have to fill them in with something (any ideas?)

Has anyone attempted this before? Any words of advice?

I also had the idea of taking some sandpaper to the sideart to try to get the paint to stick, and kind of turn the side art into a huge paint-by-numbers, for lack of a better metaphor.  I think repainting the whole thing could look really cool as I really like the look of brushstrokes, and it would give that handpainted feel even if I would just be painting the blue parts blue again, and the red parts red, etc.

I'll try to get some pics if I can.

I tried to give a second coat over one of the larger gashes and it covers a bit better but it still is very noticeable as a touch up. I guess I was just hoping for too much.

Anyone think that my sandpaper/repainting idea would work? If no one has any experience with this, I'll just take my sander to it tomorrow and find out the hard way. :)

I'd put some wood filler in the big gashes first, if you decide to sand and paint the whole side.

What Xmen game are you referring to?

I am gonna go the filler/sand/paint route.  I just wasnt happy with how the cover up job was going. It was far too noticeable. I'm gonna take some pics today as a kind of "Before" set and then take some once I'm done. Good thing is, if I really want to, I can alter the colors a bit to fit in with the rest of my planned cab. I'm thinking of changing the bluish-purple background to a slate grey to fit in with a planned CP overlay.

I just don't know when I'll be able to get it done with school. May have to wait til the semester is over :(

And as far as what game it is, I'm referring to the older 4 player beat-em-up Xmen game with a 25" monitor.
