WG D9200 and 800x600
« on: March 12, 2004, 02:07:14 pm »
Hi,

im having some trouble with my 9200 in winxp
when i try to set my monitor to 800x600 using the ati control panel icon (using arcadeVGA)
it changes to 800x600 200hz and the screen is very dim and foggy, how do i get my monitor to run in 800x600?

Speaking of 800x600 on a D9200..   is there a problem running the D9200 at this resolution?   Thought i read some threads a while back here or somewhere else stating this can burn out the monitor.
Anyone know if this is the case?  I've been hesitant to use 800x600 for this reason.

Yes, running the d9200 at 800x600 can damage it.  Right now the highest supported hclock for this monitor is 31kHz (give or take 1-2kHz).  It looks like wellsgardner might release a 15-38kHz model in the near future, as they allude to a "27 Inch D9200 Digital Monitor - Universal (31 / 38 KHZ) . . . not available" on their site.

As a practical matter, does anyone worry about this?  Is this can damage it if you leave it in this mode for days and days on end (as it would be in an arcade), or can damage it if you run your frontend 800x600 for more items in a list?

Seems like they would have just extended the "Out of Range" error to these frequencies if they were very problematic.

I'm sure there are no hard and fast rules, but if either someone out there ran it for a short amount of time and had a problem, or ran it for a ton of time with no problems I would be interested.  I had been planning on running my frontend and vector games 800x600.

I e-mailed a tech support person at Wells Gardner letting him know that there was a bunch of confusion about this.  Here is his response:

"There is no problem operating the monitor in the 800 X 600 mode as long as you run horizontal sync at 35KHZ. If you run this mode at a higher horizontal sync it will display the message "Out of Range" and this is why we don't advertise it as 800 X 600. I will look into stating this on our website."

Makes me feel better about running the FE/Windows/Vector Games at 800x600.

If I'm not mistaking, isn't the 800x600 in Windows running a horizontal sync of 37khz?  That still seems very high to me, considering that is quite a bit out of the stated 31khz.  I do run windows at 800x600 either way though, and I personally have never had any issues with it.  The D9200 has just been GREAT for me!

It went right past me (must be the beer ;D )  But uepa's dead on.  Window's 800x600 runs at 37-38kHz, not 35kHz.  So this mode is still a very high amount of overclocking.

Okay, appearantly the D9200 has 600 lines and can safely use 35kHz.

In Windows the videomode is:
37 kHz / 600 lines ~= 60 Hz

The max horizontal sync the D9200 was designed for is 35kHz, so we need:
35 kHz / 600 lines ~= 56 Hz

Note: the calculations above allow 1.5Hz for vertical blanking. The time needed for vertical blanking varies from monitor to monitor.

Conclusion: don't use Windows 800x600, but use a front end that uses a tweaked mode for 800x600 at 55Hz or less. If you don't want to push the limit, 50Hz non-interlaced is still very acceptable.

I should clarify though, that I rarely use Windows, hence the 800x600 resolution it uses.  Only for updating my cab via network and other general maintenance.  That could be why I haven't had any problems.  As far as using it regularly, I don't know if that would be wise.

I was just looking at my PC (not my cab) and noticed under the "List All Modes..." button there are three that should work with the D9200.

800x600, 256 colors, 56Hz
800x600, 16 bit color, 56Hz
800x600, 32 bit color, 56Hz

I'll have to check if the same settings are available on my cab running the D9200 with a Trident Blade T64.  If available, they would seem ok to use.

If you must have 800x600 @ 60Hz, I can recommend the Hantarex Polostar 25.
