Are resistors directional?
« on: March 11, 2004, 08:19:55 pm »
I'm building OSCAR's Super Bright LED driver.  I'm using Vishay/Dale 1/4W 2% and 5% Metal Film Resistors 2% 1K OHM 1/4W and Vishay/Dale 1/4W 2% and 5% Metal Film Resistors 2% 150 OHM 1/4W resistors.

The 1K Ohm resistors a red stripe on one side, followed by a red, a black, and a brown stripe on the other side.  The 150 Ohm resistors have a red stripe on one side, followed by a red, a black, and a brown stripe on the other side.

My question is: Does it matter which direction they're mounted in?  Can they be mounted "backward"?  I checked out the data sheets on these, and I don't see anything.

Thanks in advance and stuff!

They work in any direction. Diodes are the ones that only work one way. Hey when you are done let's see some pics.

most components are directional (diodes, capacitors, etc).

Resistors are one of the few that are not.

Some capacitors are not directional.

LEDS are directionsal too, they are diodes.

Sasquatch-  Just FYI, those stripes on the resistors are just a quick way to tell the value just by looking at them. :)

When I was in avionics school for the Navy, we learned a mnemonic to remember the colors that was kind of dirty.  ;)

Yep, but sometimes you have to point out the obvious.

I was just going to post if anyone remembered the mneumonic device for the resitor color code...

Sadly I do not (the clean or the dirty one...) it's been like uh 11 years since I've even thought about that...

I've always remembered the color codes because of the middle section going ROYGBV, which is pretty much the ROY-G-BIV that people use to remember the colors of the rainbow. For the other colors, it just goes light to dark, so there is black brown at the beginning, grey white at the end.

Big boys race our young girls but Violet generally wins.  Just replace big with bad, race with rape, generally with gives, and wins with willingly for the dirty version.

black, brown, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, gray, white

Sorry if this is too dirty for BYOAC.
