BEZELS, Bezels, bezels ... Anyone made their own ?
« on: March 11, 2004, 04:15:22 pm »
Ok, just finalising my plans, in prep of getting the MDF sheets at the end of the month.

The intention is to get a 27" WG D9200 monitor (max unit width of 24.390", by their specs), when I can afford it.

I have a restriction on the width of the cab due to the width of the doors in our house (29.75"). Hence I was thinking I would leave an inch either side (is that enough ???), then using 5/8" MDF (16mm actually, but close enough) gives me a total cab width of 27.64", and everything is happy !

Now I had originally hoped to use a Happs 27" bezel, but from:

http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=12445;start=msg97001#msg97001

the bezel is 29.5" wide (thats some serious overhang either side). Once the MDF is added to both sides, I couldn't get the unit through the doorways ...

So, has anyone made their own bezel (and can hit me with some pointers, like what material you used, how it looked etc ?

Else if you didn't use a bezel, how did you present your monitor within the cabinet ?

Cheers

I'm not sure what to do either...I have a 21" screen and I haven't seen bezels available for that size :(

I see some people just paint the inside of the glass/plexi, or fix a piece of black (sometimes with instructions) card behind the glass.

I'd like to make a mitre'd effect bezel like the one on System 1 cabs (you can just about make it out here: http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=I&game_id=8186 ).  Not sure the best way to do that tho :(

I saw a post about a week ago where a guy detailed how he went about making his own control panel.

Take a look at this.

It looks pretty nice. I am thinking of the same thing.

I've seen that example...

but there is a problem with it... He was copying one that already existed.

I have a happs 27" that I haven't mounted yet.  I might take a look at try to trace it out for others.

But don't expect anything for a while... I'm SO busy these days... I just played the first game of robotron for about 3 weeks... eeek

A Happ bezel is designed to be trimmed to fit.  I have a WG D9200 27" monitor mounted in a cabinet 27.5" wide.  My bezel is trimmed to 26" wide.  It could easily have been trimmed down to 25" if needed.

Trimming the bezel plastic is a matter of slicing it with a sharp utility knife along a straight edge.

Thanks for that info daeven, if thats the case, I will definately get a happs one then, as no doubst if I try to make one myself, I will make a mess of it.

I guess it doesn't matter too much, but was this information mentioned on their site, or was it a case of buy and try ?

Cheers

Concidering the cost + shipping of the Happs bezel, you could waste quite a few sheets of posterboard and still come out ahead.
