  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
Custom-made, game-specific, modular control panels
« on: January 15, 2026, 06:34:44 pm »
Dear all

A few years ago I stumbled across a post (not sure where) of a guy who was making his own control panels for specific arcade games with unusual control setups. They were absolutley stunning! Hand crafted in ply, with T-molding and vinyl arwork and the correct button layouts etc etc.

I cannot find either this guy or anyone who seems to be interested in similar. Maybe I'm just a bad googler.

I am in the market to make a few of my own and was hoping to find inspiration from the community.

The controls panels are to be 2P, made of wood, have artwork, contain an IPAC2 or similar and be connected to MAME/MiSTer setups vis USB.

My initial list is;

Karate Champ (4x Joystick controls)
Ikari Warriors (2x Rotary sticks and buttons)
Golden Tee Golf (Trackball and buttons)

If anyone has any input or knows the guy who was making their own to such a high standard plesae do let me know.

Cheers all

Not sure who you're referring to, but for inspiration check out the Control Panel Database thread.

There's also a thread here about swappable panels.
https://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,163509.0.html

Telengard has done some full swappable panels, but changed to a modular setup with server rack rails and metal server rack panels.

Paul Olson built an impressive collection of modular panels.

GeoMan did a series of standalone controllers in project boxes.

I am in the market to make a few of my own and was hoping to find inspiration from the community.

The controls panels are to be 2P, made of wood, have artwork, contain an IPAC2 or similar and be connected to MAME/MiSTer setups vis USB.

My initial list is;

Karate Champ (4x Joystick controls)
Ikari Warriors (2x Rotary sticks and buttons)
Golden Tee Golf (Trackball and buttons)
Karate Champ is a good choice.
- The original cab had 4-way sticks, but it should work well with 8-way sticks which would allow you to play some other dual stick games.  I don't remember any problems like getting stuck on a ladder in dkong if you accidently hit a diagonal in kchamp.
https://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/Joysticks#Games_with_Dual_Joysticks
- You may want to include the kick/punch instruction grid from the bezel into the panel artwork.
- For the six Taito Aim-n-Fire games like Sheriff, you can map the left stick for movement and the right stick for aim and map all four directions to fire in MAME. (this makes it work like Robotron)
https://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,163248.msg1719330.html#msg1719330

Ikari Warriors is also a good choice as long as you use mechanical (not optical) rotary sticks and the right MAME settings.
- Use 3 player buttons if you want to play Ikari III, otherwise, you will only need 2.
https://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/Joysticks#Mechanical_Rotary_Joystick_Games_.28LS-30.2C_Happ_Mechanical_Rotary_Sticks.29
- Be sure to adjust the MAME settings like this so you get 1 click = 1 step.
https://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/Joysticks#MAME_Settings_for_Mechanical_Rotary_Joysticks
- There are several stick, encoder and handle options with pros and cons for each -- Ultimarc, GRS, roll your own.  Make sure you get or make the right combination for your preferences.

You might also want to consider either a dual triggerstick (Battlezone) or quad triggerstick (2-player Sarge) setup.

Another popular layout is 5 button Asteroids/Gravitar.  Leaf switches recommended.

There's also the Star Wars yoke and other analog joystick/positional gun games.
https://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/Joysticks#Analog_Joysticks

You may want to work through the design process in the FAQ, especially the games list, controls, and encoders sections. (2, 4, and 7)
https://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/FAQ#What_type_of_build_meets_my_needs.3F

One way to avoid a specialized panel for Defender and Stargate is to use this "defenderlr" LUA script.
- The script allows you to use an 8-way stick in place of the Up/Down stick, Reverse button, and Thrust button.

Or this classic approach...

http://crapmame.com/2019/09/15/crapmame-6-of-30/

Ohh Noes... The Amazon Scammer is trying to hurt my fee-fees.  Whatever will I do?

You should realize, that Im not embarrassed about my Ancient Prototype.  In fact, Im quite proud to have built THREE
Custom Controllers:

A Analog Sinistar Stick, with a Custom Rubber-X centering SpringA

A Super Hangon Controller, with Twist Throttle + Magnetic Reed switch Brake mechanism, that actually worked in mame
(That game uses two switches, to function properly)

A Starwars Yoke, with 4 unique triggers

I even built a Custom Spinner, with a Tron-Like Base, dual ball bearings... with the intend to TRY to eventually make it
out of Clear UV reactive Resin.   Unfortunately, my plastics + molding experience was awful.. so that project fell apart

The truth is, I never cared if others thought my CP looked Ugly.  It was built with the sole purpose of playing as
many games as possible, with the correct controllers.   When everything was mounted together, it actually was
comfortable, at any of the 6 positions.

But mid-project... my ideas started to Change.   For example.. I discovered the Joys of Leafswitch controls,
and that alone, threw my original designs for a loop.  I also was struggling to make a custom 6 way shifter,
before eventually picking up some Race-Drivin shifters off of Ebay.

There were other issues too... Such as Mame not even supporting Toggle based shifters.  No encoders that had
enough inputs for what I wanted to do... (without switches involved).

A lack of funds.  A lack of Space (which is why I opted for one unit, rather than multiple cabinets / stored panels)
And being too busy with Work

Then my health took a nose dive.
Then all of my arcade controllers, got stolen out of my minivan (while in the process of moving)

 Joy.

But yeah, keep trying to punish Creativity and Innovation.  It just reeks of Jealousy, Pettiness, and bruised Ego issues

For the record.. the new Design Idea that was forming... was going to be a Horizontally Rotating system, similar to
another creative BYOAC innovator (cant recall the username anymore).  Except my idea, was that it would be a
massive.. fully enclosed... "Environmental" box.   It would have had multiple monitors, 3d Mirror effects,
surround sound / movie Theater,  and would have had a suspended Bed that Lowered into place.

I also thought about making UV reactive plastic carved panels, so that artistically, it looked somewhat similar internally..
to the Discs of Tron Environmental Cabinet.

But eventually my health got super bad... and I lost everything.  So be happy... because you likely will never see another
creative prototype, let alone a new controller.. from the notorious X2.

- But at least I can say, that I provided the Artwork Scans for Discs of Tron, in Mame.
(years before Mame could even support it in its proper full color depth)

- Created the Blacklight Backdrop photo for Video-Pinball, in Mame
- Sent Schematic copies in for Discs of Tron Environmental's  lights to get working properly in Mame
- Got a rare  TX-1 Rom Dumped for Mame  (turned out to be a Duplicate, but still... it was Dumped)
- Helped in the process to get Multiple Mice into Mame
- Helped in the Arguments about supporting unique arcade controllers into mame (and took the abuses, for even speaking up about it)

Frankly, I admire the creativity everyone had back then.  I made a couple of cabinets that were prime candidates for that website.
