Cabinet with Rack mounted server equipment - anyone do this?
« on: September 16, 2024, 04:35:00 pm »
We have very limited space in our home.  I've got some slightly noisy rack mounted equipement in closet in the house that I'd like to perhaps move into the (air conditioned) garage where our mame cabinet is.

The mame cabinet (Slik Stick 4 player model I've had for close to 30 years) has a large space under the 32" wells gardner CRT that only holds a small dell pc right now.  It's ripe for some sort of use for adding computer equipment.

I realize I could just cut a hole in the side and slide in some rails or a small rack, but I'm wondering if anyone else has done this before and if there are any examples - google searching I've come up blank.

Would be interested in ease of use, noise isolation, and appearance.  Plus not compromising the strength of the MDF construction as that CRT is a heavy girl.

I think you're on your own here.

Putting noisy equipment inside a MAME cabinet is the opposite of what most people would want - a quiet computer inside the cabinet.

Most rack mounted equipment is noisy due to the (smaller) fans trying to push/pull enough air through the enclosure to keep the system cool.  Putting the rack inside a large wooden box will probably reduce the noise somewhat but also restrict the airflow and potentially cause the system to overheat.
MAME Projects % completed:
2004 3 sided cocktail cabinet w/ modular CP <25% (discarded)
2004 Tempest cabinet & CP > 75% (sold)
2017 Raspberry Pi Zero W w/ Lakka microconsole 50%
2021 Vertical Bartop - in progress > 80%, 100% functional (sleeping)
