old joystick to new joystick wiring

Hi all, new to the forum and brand new to arcade modding.

I have a custom built cabinet with a pandora box DX installed. Lately the joysticks have been sticking making gaming hard/not fun.
I purchased a new SANWA joystick but noticed when I opened up the cabinet that the old ones are connected by connections all around the joystick, whereas the new one has a 5-pin connector.

Can I disconnect the old one, and plug those cables straight into the sides or I do I need to cut the old wires, and connect them directly to the 5-pin connector cable that came with the new joystick ?

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Your new joystick probably came with a 5-wire harness like this one.



Crimp a male Quick Disconnect (QD) on each of the 5 wires.
- Use a red (for 22-18 gauge wire) male QD the same width as the female QDs on the original harness -- either 0.187" or 0.250".
- You only need to connect one of the daisy-chain ground connections from the old stick (black wire) to the ground on the new stick. (the pcb on the new stick provides the daisy-chain ground for the four switches)

- Check the pinouts.  Remember that they are the view from the bottom/under the panel.

- Don't assume the wire colors will match.

- Remember that when you move the lever one way, it hits the switch on the opposite side.

Thank you very much for your reply. What I did was disconnect all the spade connections and connect them up to the 5 pin harness that came with the new joystick.
All appeared to be perfect except left is right and right is left now... Any ideas which 2 colour wires I need to swap over to fix this?

All good. A bit of trial and error, just had to swap the yellow and green wires around. Stick working perfectly now ! 😁

You got lucky this time -- you didn't release the magic smoke that makes all electronics work.   

Instead of trial and error, you need to know two things and check the pinout that I linked to earlier -- you did check the pinouts, right?

1. Is the black wire on the end (Sanwa color order), in the center (Seimitsu color order), or some other color order?

2. Which way are the pins pointing?
- Toward/away from the monitor ==> Sanwa Red + Orange.
- Toward/away from the buttons ==> Sanwa Yellow + Green.

The bottom right picture is how it is for me now.

I knew black was earth as that was the one that was bridged everywhere on the old joystick. Then all I had to do was remove one colour at a time and see what direction wasn't working anymore.
