Assistance with figuring out how to power an arcade CRT.
« on: June 19, 2023, 03:43:47 pm »
Hello!

I want to start by saying I apologize if this is the incorrect board to post this, I am incredibly new here so I wasn't sure where to post. I am asking for some help figuring out how to power an Arcade CRT I recently purchased. Let me also start by saying I am very new to this hobby and the current cabinet I am restoring/building is the first one I have done. I have a fair amount of knowledge when it comes to modern computers and computer hardware but as a 21-year-old, CRT technology is a bit before my time

I bought a 29" color CRT Monitor to put into my cabinet. I originally didn't plan to go with one this large but I got an insanely good deal on it. It is 120v AC at 60hz but it does not have a PSU and instead has these loose cords that look like old computer power cables. I apologize if this is an obvious question but how exactly do I power it? I have money to purchase whatever Power Supply Unit or Switch I need but I don't even know where to start looking. The monitor has a VGA input which I am planning on using to input the video. I have gutted an old gaming laptop and fixed it to the removable board on the inside to run as the brains of the machine and that has a separate power cable so I don't need to worry about powering it. The CRT however, needs to be powered independently so I am unsure how I am supposed to do that  :'(

The information for the monitor is as follows:

Type:  29" CRT Color Display Assembly

Sega Part Number: 200-5949

Model Name: 29E31S-B

Power: AC120V 60Hz

Serial Number: 15882

I have attached images of the monitor as well so that you may see what it looks like and what the power connectors look like. Thank you so much for your time and help, if there is any more information I need to divulge or any questions you have for me, please feel free to either email me or respond in the thread to let me know.

Thanks,

that monitor is a "Sanwa 29E31S" those 3 connectors are power, the RGB video signal, and a connection for a degauss switch (at least i'm pretty sure. been a hot min since i've worked on one.)

this monitor does not have a "PSU" its power supply is integrated into the main board. you simply feed it 120v AC from your wall outlet on the appropriate connector, and it will power up on it's own, so you will have to switch the power off and on to turn the screen on and off.

this screen will only display 640x480 at 60hz refresh rate. don't attempt to supply any other resolution, as they will not display properly and/or may damage the monitor to do so.
