thank you for the reply...do you know if I can use putty or wood pieces and putty to plug it?
Putty
by itself usually isn't a good option since most of them contract a bit as they dry -- more putty, more shrinkage.
Use a drill press and holesaw (minus the centering drill-bit, if possible) to cut a plug.
Put the plug in the hole and tap in wedges of wood to secure it flush with the top of the CP.
Fill in the remaining gaps with putty (or Bondo) and sand it smooth.
