Happ button to remotely start/shutdown pc?
« on: March 02, 2004, 11:08:36 am »
Hi All,

What kind of button do I need to wire to the MB header on the PC? is it just a simple button going to either the always open or always closed (whichever it is) or is it a different kind?

I'd like to mount the button somewhere in the back or (front below the control panel) so that I can turn the everything on from it (using a smart strip to power everything on when the PC turns on...)

Thanks!

Art

Most pcs use a normally open momentary switch for turning on.  This would include probably just about all buttons that Happ sells (yes it does include the "normal" arcade buttons).  I used #275-618 from Radio Shack instead because I like the look of the button.

i have mine wired to a regular pushbutton right now from happs...but i was also looking for a cooler looking method for turning on the cab.  could i get one of those silver/metal flip switches?  you know, the silver rod switch that goes either up or down (on/off) almost like a toggle switch.  maybe thats the name of it.  would that have the NO and GND things that i need similar to the pushbutton???

www.mcmaster.com

has some cool LED tipped toggle switches.  Most PC power switches that I've seen are momentary contact.  I'm sure someone makes a momentary contact toggle though.  I remember using one in a model rocket launcher I built when I was a kid.

hulkster081,  some pc's will NOT work with a toggle switch.  My regular pc would be a prime example.  It will not startup until after I release the power button.

There are momentary toggles out there. I know I've seen them, just don't remember where.

If it's a momentary, it will work.  But beware, some momentaries are normally closed, and the circuit opens when you flip the switch.  Not paying attention bit me in the butt a while back.

Be sure it's a N.O. switch.

They do make momentary toggles.  Other electronic sources are:

www.mouser.com

www.digikey.com

I believe Mouser has a $25 minimum order though...

That one will probably work, but it looks like a 3 position, On-Off-On.  The center pole is the common.

Yeah, that three position switch should do the trick.

I think I came up with a solution that works for me... my coin door had four buttons inside for rst/maintenance etc.  I rewired two of them and used the wiring harness to wire them to the motherboard headers.  I also wired the lights to the 12V power from the PC...

I may wire the other two buttons to the ipac sometime later... :)
